I need a new TT.
I presume that both the GO 530 and GO 540 can still use the warning sounds.
Are these units generally okay. I see TT have a refurb 530 for £119 or Total PDA have a 540 for £139
Any thing I should know before I decide.
Thanks |

Hi pocketgps - I have just bought a referb 930 from TT to supplement my 730. I think that the x30 range is great. I read something somewhere that the x40 range lacks some of the bells and whistles apart from the 940. Personally, I'd go with the 530 which I can confirm still has the proximity alerts. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Thanks AliOnHols for your help.
But just noticed this TT.
TomTom XL IQ 2 xl2 v4 - 4th Edition - Europe £141 delivered.
Can they still use add-on warning sounds.
Thanks. |

The 530 is the better product out of all the ones you listed as its a fully equipped unit offering FM Tx, mp3 etc.
DO NOT go anywhere near any device from TomTom that has a small 2 in the device name as they don't support custom POI warnings along with a whole host of other features that are missing from the dumbed down menu - Mike |

Agree with all of the above, but the one thing not mentioned is LIVE.
.
I think you should be sticking to the two models you're looking at already (plus one addition, see below).
The big thing you need to consider when choosing between the Go 530 and Go 540 is whether you want LIVE services (HD Traffic, Google local search etc.).
The Go x30 models don't have it, the Go x40 and x50 models do.
But the 530 has the mp3 player, complete with FM transmitter and Bluetooth audio transmission. Of the x40 models only the 940 has that.
The 540 also has a better windscreen mount.
The other model to consider, if you can still find one, is the original "XL LIVE IQ Routes Edition" (i.e. not with the little "2" in the name)
The XL LIVE IQ doesn't have Text to Speech like the Go models above (although it can possibly still be added), and doesn't have any hands-free phone stuff, but (as the name suggests!) it does have the LIVE services. |

If you are interested in LIVE services (and I can confirm the HD now works quite well), consider also the 550: it may turn out to be the cheapest option since it includes 1 year subs (that would cost 47.50 GBP).
If you shop around you could find pretty good deals on the 550 |

I've just remembered why I opted for the 930 and not the 940. The 940 needs a special mount for RDS-TMC traffic info. I'm not sure if this is supplied in the box or bought as an optional extra so I decided not to take the chance. Admittedly, if you are going down the subscription based LIVE route, buying an extra mount to obtain free RDS-TMC is not an obstacle.
However, I could be wrong and may soon learn that I should have bought the 940 after all. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Thanks every one for all the information.
I have ordered a GO 530 refurb of TT web site.
WoW - Already got tracking number from UPS - that was quick
Will let you know how I get on.
I did ring TT customer services before I placed the order and was told that the map should be the latest 8.5 version. Will have to see what I get.
Is that the latest version |

I have just had a refurb Go730 from the TT site. You are eligible for the Latest Map Guarantee so it should update to the latest version for free, if not already installed. |

Prior to LMG a full Windows Explorer backup, then to avoid the headache of the V850 map not fitting on the device get a 4GB (or larger card) and copy the existing map to the memory card, use LMG with Home directed to the SD card and you should get the full Western_Europe map installed rather than one of the stupid zoned versions they seem to think are the latest fad -
Bear in mind the 730 can use SDHC memory cards up to and including 32GB capacity, which offers plenty of scope for mp3 tracks as well as maps if you feel inclined to add your music collection to the device - Mike |

I received my TT GO 530 yesterday (Friday).
All okay and was able to update to map version 850.2781 via latest map guarantee
One small problem is the standard screen mount won't allow it to work with my bean bag.
See on ebay that there are some different mounts including TT's own EasyPort type. Does any body know if the TT one works with a bean bag. |

It depends how much clearance for the power plug your bean bag allows. I suspect you will need either the Arkon or TT horse-shoe shaped BB, or one that has a cut-away section, or the raised Gilsson cushion-type mount to get room to plug in the power cable when using an easyport. You might be better off getting a mount that allows a bit more clearance? _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]
