A2DP Bluetooth GPS receivers for iPhone

Well it seems i have exhausted my googling search for an external bluetooth GPS receiver that supports A2DP. There appears to be none anywhere. if this is so why. Is it something technical im overlooking or what. I would love to be able to use my Navigon app on my iphone3G with an external GPS receiver to improve my GPS signal

A2DP is a Bluetooth profile for transmitting and receiving stereo sound. It is used for BT stereo headphones and car kits to communicate with phones etc.. AFAIK it is irrelevant for a BT GPS receiver as it would not be able to use it anyway.

I am not sure what profile a BT GPS receiver uses - think it may be serial but others will probably be able to tell you.

When My iphone was jailbroken i was able to use an app called "roqyBluetooth" (aka roqyBT) it is a complete bluetooth stack which takes control of the bluetooth chip in your device over the official bluetooth. i was able to use my Co-Pilot GPS receiver. But now in iOS4 i have not been able to use it Guess i will need to JB the phone when there is a JB solution out there. I hate having to JB the phone just to be able to have this simple solution of connecting an external GPS receiver. It drives my to distraction

What you need is SPP (Serial Port Profile) which is available to a JB'd iFone when running the roqyBT app, the other option is the TomTom Car Kit albeit rather costly - Mike

So the bottom line is that unless my iphone is JB i have no way of connecting an external GPS receiver except for the tomtom car kit which im unsure about, from the reviews it does not seem to improve GPS reception greatly and @ £99 is not worth the layout if it don't do the job well. I was expecting a review on the Magellan car kit. But did a search here and there does not seem to be one although it was stated there would be a review.

I do now own an iPhone 4 and have to say. Im very impressed with the GPS. I can now, believe it or not. In any part of my house setup my Navigon app and plan a route and hit "start navigation" it calculates and and i'm ready to set off.. Compared to my 3Gs I would never get a signal in any part of the house I would always be offered "Simulation" mode until i was out of the house and standing still. So maybe if the iphone 4 stays sharp i won't need a solution to an external gps unit....... Cheers guys
