Test what you are offered for the annual map update service for the 700 - you'll probably find that to update to the latest map AND get the next four maps free is actually cheaper than what you paid for just one map. You'd then have up to date maps on the best TT model still around!
The last time I plugged the 700 into home, it was only offering one upgrade deal: Around 30 quid for the map, and roughly the same again for four quarterly updates. They had to be bought together, so that was 60 quid in total. Bearing in mind that I typically only use the unit once a year, I'd rather pay 50 quid just to bring it up to date.
To be honest, my rant is based on a number of elements of TomTom related bad luck that someone with a more paranoid outlook might even consider a conspiracy i.e.
* Cheapskate Renault only sticking the UK and Ireland map in the slot when I bought the car. I'd have expected less pettiness on a 25K car, but I'd happily have paid the extra myself if offered the chance. My last Renault had Western Europe on a DVD.
* The car is only a couple of months old, so I'm upgrading a map that's probably no older than the one I've bought. I'll see no benefits at all in the UK.
* I seem to have missed out on the free 700 update by a matter of hours: Plugged my 700 into Home and it offered the update, but errored when trying to download the file. Shortly afterwards, it wasn't even offering the update.
* And now I've paid 40% over the odds for a product that been marked down because it's about to become obsolete.
None of the above amounts to unfair treatment, but it's a fair old string of bad luck, and that's reason enough to get the hump about it
There is good news though: Having taken the car over to France for the first time, we've decided that we enjoy that kind of holiday so much that we'll probably do it again in preference to flying abroad and hiring a car. So at least there's less justification for forking out for newer 700 maps. _________________ TomTom GO700

Sounds a bit confusing - have you registered the Renault TomTom thing using the previous GO700 registration email address?

I have two accounts with two separate e-mail addresses (I'd already used my 'proper' address for the 700, so I used my Hotmail one for the Renault system.) Home switches between the two, depending on which device I connect.
The offers do seem to be a bit hit and miss, don't they? The last time I looked, Home wasn't offering the option of just buying the map. I had to buy the map and the updates together at approximately £30 each. Perhaps they were offering Western Europe at £70, but didn't bother to show it as this was a better but cheaper option. Though I thought that the non-IQ maps were cheaper to start out with.
They say that every cloud has a silver lining. I've had a circular land on my desk from Navteq, offering me the latest maps for the VDO based system that I had in my last car but one. £89.10 for 2010/2011 UK and Ireland, and that's with a 10% discount. From that point of view, £70 for Western Europe is a steal. _________________ TomTom GO700
