|
|
The usb socket on my 720 (the unit itself - not the charge cable) has developed a slight wobble due to it sitting on the dash I expect, and now does not charge all the time and will switch off. Not good to carry on like that.
What is the recommended way forward for repair please?
Could a decent electronics repair guy sort this? |

Its far from easy to fix the USB socket as its soldered to the PCB as well as clamped through the hole, you will have to remove all the solder before being able to release the body of the connector - I have a 920 with the same issue and have nearly given up on trying to get the socket off the PCB - It certainly wasn't designed with repair in mind!
One option is to use silicon sealant to "glue" to the socket back to the PCB negating removing it, worth a try as it should stop it wobbling about - Mike |

Sounds like the solder joints to the board itself have cracked, in which case they need to be re-soldered.
I'd have thought that could maybe be done without complete removal and replacement, if the socket itself is OK. Mike?
(Although the mechanical strengthening that Mike suggests would be very advisable too).
It's a job for an electronics field engineer with experience of surface-mount components, rather than someone who remembers soldering from a few years ago.
I've had mine apart a few times, but have to admit I've got no mental image of how easy it is to get to the USB socket contacts onto the board. |

There were quite a few posts a while ago about this individual where on more than one occasion the Police were involved trying to return peoples devices as they had been sent for repair for ages, tread carefully if I were you - Mike |

The one located in London was fine, the one in Shefield left a bit to be desired in terms of service from what a few forum members reported, I haven't used either of them for repairs as I usually do my own but the USB socket isn't very easy (and yes I do know about soldering, including surface mount components) - Mike |

And if Mike has problems with a tiddy bit of soldering, the rest of us mere mortals better watch out and stand no chance |

Nick, They do give online quotes as well. Please let us know how you get on as members often ask about repairs and it would be good to know of a good repairer.
Apparently if you are near enough to take it to their London premises in the morning they can normally have it ready for collection in the evening. _________________ TT Go Essential |
