I wait with bated breath.... _________________ Cracking Toast Gromit!

Looks like a ANPR camera to me?
These seem to be popping up all over the place and presumably to track us as well as the usual remote insurance and MOT checks. _________________ DashCam:

My guess would be that it's an anpr camera to make the recognition of the offending car easier to read. It's only a guess though. |

Could it be just an Infra-red illuminator, to help the Gatso see better in the dark?
I've seen quite a lot of those, but never quite the same shape as yours, which I have to admit does look more "camera-like". |

I've just had a close up look at one of these cams. The 'lens' is not fully transparent, but has a sort of diffuser fitted, so I have revised my assessment of thes and am now 99% sure that it is a secondary flash unit to better light up the back of the car.
EDIT: 'My' cam is like the square single 'lens' one shown below, but I havn't tested my theory on the road.

We've covered these before and aren't a lot wiser as to what they are.
First were reported back in 2007 on the A303, two additional cameras next to an existing GATSO:

Hi,
The silver poles infront of the gatso is the slave flash unit, this is used when the site has been upgraded to use the new digital gatso camera. This is required as the digital camera is less sensitive in the dark versus a wet film camera. |
