|
|
Hi – I have a 3 year old Dell Computer running XP. It won’t seem to recognise the 4GB SD card I want to download a US map onto, and I assume this is because my PC is too old and won’t recognise the High Capacity card.
I know I can buy an adaptor, but for speed is it possible to download the maps to my PC, then insert the SD card into my TomTom 520 and copy from the PC onto the SD card in situ?
I am not a techie so if it is possible can you please give some guidance so I do not copy the maps onto my TomTom internal memory / overwrite my UK maps.
Many thanks |

When you put the card into the 520, connect the 520 to the computer, do TWO external drives show up in Explorer, one representing the 520 and the other drive for the card? If so, you are good to go.
(Are you sure the card itself is good?) _________________ David |

I have a similar aged Dell Dimension 5150 running XP and it won't read SDHC. I think there may also be a limit to the size of card.......2GB max I seem to remember but I could be wrong.
When I connect my 520 to Home I am given the choice of using the 520 internal memory or the SD card. Can't you just choose the SD card and download the map to it via Home? |

Hi - thanks for the replies. As all sat navs seem a little tempramental, and this is a £50 download, I would prefer to save it to my PC first.
I will try dhn's idea and hopefully "bobs your uncle".
Thanks again. |

The maps are alwasy downloaded to your PC first.
Usually the TomTom\HOME\Download\complete\map folder. Check where yours will go by looking under the Folders tab in TT Home. You can find it under Tools, Preferences. |

Same reply as PaulB2005 all downloads are written to your PC first then when they are complete on the PC and only then, they are written to the TT device, so will not loose the download if it fails to write to the card.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 530 running Windows XP SP3 with the Dell supplied multi card reader, it can be a bit flaky, one day it will reject a card it has used before, the next it will accept the same one, but not tried an SDHC card yet so don't know. |
