|
|
I've been thinking about upgrading from my TT 940 to one of the new models with HD traffic, but was holding off for a while due to the price of the new models.
I just read that there's an HD Traffic update awaiting approval from Apple to go on to the App Store. Does anyond have any first hand experience with the current iPhone TomTom app? How is it's performance in comparison to the standalone devices?
It would be nice not to have to worry about the extra device in my car & just use my phone instead, but I don't want to jump in with both feet without some research though
(I did try a search, but couldn't find any discussions about the iPhone app) |

The fact you can't import the PGPSW Speed Camera Database (or any 3rd party POIs) without jailbreaking (JB) the iPhone is a negative for me.
Also you can't run TomTom for iPhone and the PGPSW CamrAlert app at the same time either (not sure about if it's JB).
If these could be done without JB then as soon as the HD Traffic was on TT for iPhone i'd get one and sell my 740... |

Also have a look at this thread which compares some of the nav apps for iPhone.
Also see the Apple iPhone Forum... |

Thanks for the pointers... Not sure how I missed the iPhone forum
One of the reasons I didn't go for the first iteration of the iPhone app was the lack of ability to import custom POIs. But my existing 940 is starting to play up a bit, so I need to think about some kind of replacement. It doesn't work on battery at all any more & is crashing more than I'd like too.
Having said that, I think I may wait until the next iPhone is announced in a couple of months (hopefully), as I think my iPhone 3G (not s) may be a little on the slow side having read the review & some of the comments here.
Anyhow, thanks again, I'll move over to the correct forum now |

If you do get the iPhone app there is no way to add the speed camera database to the iPhone without jailbreaking it, even if you do this there is no option to set the Warn When Near POI so even with the PGPSW database on the iPhone app it will only show the icons on the screen no warnings!
There is of course the TomTom database installed to the iPhone app but thats nothing short of a joke in terms of being out of date, earlier today I was getting warnings for cameras on the M6 and M61 that were removed from the roadside some 9 months ago - They are still on the iPhone app - Mike |

My iphone with the latest TT v1.3 picked up the recently install cameras on the A404 yesterday. The HD traffic is good. I got the impression off the TT website that HD traffic updated the speed camera positions - I might have got that wrong. |

Yes, HD Traffic is good. But TT cameras are a complete joke.
If you get some which are accurate, consider yourself very lucky. If your impression is correct and they are updated on the fly, I hate to think where their data is coming from - flying pigs, maybe. _________________ Dennis
