I apologise if this has been answered but I cant find anything on the garmin 1490t either here on or garmins site.

Can I get POI's to appear on the maps as icons and sounds as proximity alerts in the same way that they appeared on my tomtom go 700. I didnt have to do anything with the tomtom except add them as poi's (pre-loaded) that I required.

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome

Sadly Garmin only allow POIs to appear if you have a Proximity Alert set for a POI. This means you can't have POIs appear in the same way you can with TomToms.

Thanks for the speedy reply. It is a shame that this is the case. I have downloaded some POI's from this site and dowloaded them to a SD card which is loaded into the satnav, do I have to download them to the nuvi in order to set proximity alerts?

bump to you too....

If I'm understanding you, you need POILoader to upload the POIs to the Nuvi.
There must be dozens of mentions of it here, if you do a search for that word, but the easiest/best instructions are probably on the download page for the PGPSW speed camera database (click on any camera icon and look in the far right column in the Nuvi entry on the big green and yellow chart).

Hi

Two things here, I have POI loader and have downloaded some POI's from this site to a SD card which is now installed into my nuvi 1490t. I was asking "do I need to install these directly on to the nuvi to allow me to set proximity points"?

Secondly, I have another month of free saftety camera update from garmin as I have only just purchased the Nuvi 1490t. I will join and subscribe to the camera database on this site when that has expired.

If you could give me an idiots guide I would be eternally grateful

Jethro

If you wish to set Proximity Alerts for normal POIs then when you use POILoader go to Manual Mode (not Express) and each POI category will be displayed in turn giving you the option to set the Proximity Distances.

Bear in mind this get very boring in towns with the constant alerts.

Thnks for that, what I was intending to do whilst travelling through France was to have hotels (campanile, etc) show on the map allowing me to navigate to one of them. There would not be too many of them so I dont think that the alerts would be that much of a problem.

Ah well that's OK then. If you do it for petrol stations and other shops etc it gets very tiring.

Still have a practise over here first with something like Fuel Stations to decide on the alert levels you want.

from what I understand....if you download/upload other POI's to the garmin the latest one overwrites the previous one is that correct/

another thing, do they work if they stay on the sd card or do i have to put them on the nuvi as extras?

The tomtom was easier/better in adding the POI's on the route.

Basically, YES. Just add any new POIs to the POI Loader folder which already contains your existing ones, run POI Loader, and all should be well. Razz

If you want to delete some old categories from your unit just delete them from the folder before running POI Loader. They will disappear from your unit.
