|
|
I would like to have one cable to plug into the bottom of my ipaq to charge it in the car and feed it a GPS signal from the serial connector on my in car tracking system? Is there a cable to do this? Where can I buy one? I'm looking to give my dad my Navman mount and buy a memory sleeve so we can have two 3630 navigation systems in the family so mine diesn't get borrowed and not returned!
I'm pretty certain this can be done because the serial cradle can charge and sync the ipaq at the same time.
Thanks
Micky |

If such exists, how would you power it?
You still have to feed power into the Ipaq, or did you think it was not necessary?
Ipaq 36xx has a separate power input so if you are connecting a serial cable you can still feed power into the separate power input.
In other words, what you thought does not exist, because it is not necessary. _________________ Pc-Mobile

Hello PC Mobile,
Thank you for your reply, such a cable is necessary because you could hard wire the cable in your car so that you can drop the phone in a cradle and have the ipaq power connected and the GPS serial lead in one neat connector instead of two cables that need connecting seperately.
You can charge the Ipaq 3630 from the serial port at the bottom, the USB sync cable that is available charges the Ipaq as it synchronises, this is why I thought this is possible. You do not need to connect the power cable to it as well as it derives its power from the USB port.
I hope you can help,
Thanks
Micky
I would like my in car mount to have just one connector like this:

If you connect it to a PC via USB port, OK.
If you are going to connect to a serial device, the serial device is highly unlikely able to provide power thoriugh the serial cable. So you still need a power source. Whether it goes trough the connecting cable or straight to the Ipaq power input, it really does not make much difference.
The bottom line is: no one would make such cable for commercial purpose. You have to make one up yourself if you have to. _________________ Pc-Mobile

Hi Pc Mobile,
Thanks for your replies, the Carcomm mounts all come wit the type of cable I require see photo below:
There is a power and serial cable which is fed to a single connertor at the bottom of the ipaq.
The image shown above is for the 38xx model but by looking at their current site I see they now do one for the 36xx series but due to the limited on board memory it may be useless for navigation.
I thought there may be a company that just do the cables. I guess I'll either buy a Carcomm solution and butcher it or get out my soldering iron and try my luck.
Thanks for you help

I just do not understand what you were thinking.
Why not just connect a serial cable and a separate power?
You do not need a combined one. No one would make it for this simple reason. _________________ Pc-Mobile

Hi PC Mobile
A single connector would make connecting the GPS far quicker than connecting two leads, and quicker to remove. Also having just one cable hanging from the bottom of my pda mount would make my system far neater, that was why I wanted this solution.

I'm sure I've seen combined 12v and serial cables for the 3630 in the distant past.
It's not such a strange request, it's much easier just connecting the single sync connector and having that split off into 12v and serial connections as well as a neater solution? Indeed if you used one of the Brodit mounts you could fix the connector to this and have a nice cradle solution similar to the Carcomm. Sadly Carcomm never produced a cradle for the 3630 because it was already an old unti when they completed their prototype. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I do not disagree that it is a good idea - for some.
My point is, no one would produce it commercially.
Even if it were produced in the distant past, I am sure it was discovered that it was not such a good idea (to produce it commercially because the demand was so small - unnecessary really) and was discontinued.
So you have to get out the soldering iron and do it yourself, if you really persist. _________________ Pc-Mobile
