Ages ago I asked for advice on this forum about what GPS to buy for walking, and received some really helpful feedback (here).
I didn't take things any further at that stage but now am looking again at GPS datalogging when I'm out walking.
The Zycast 289 was recommended in the above thread, but this doesn't seem to be available now, so wondered if anyone could advise what a currently available equivalent device might be?
thanks
Paul

a few of us here have one of these: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/columbusv900.php

works really well and the battery lasts a long time (or can be recharged via usb [various portable chargers you can use]). also lots of storage for the data.

Have a look at the Columbus v900 (or is it v700) either way this unit is great for basic logging and if you want to enable some of the more advanced features it's one of the best, add voice tags to locations, can act as hidden data logger I think Lutz (lbendlin) wrote a review of this unit last year and quite a few of the moderators on this site have been using them for around 12 months - Mike

If all you want is a basic logger try the GlobalSat DG100 (available from Expansys £54.99 inc VAT).
I used to use several of these devices for car & bus journey time analysis and found them very reliable.
The sample rate is variable from 1 sec upwards and can collect 50,000 data points with a simple download (in various formats) via PC.
The big advantage (as far as I was concerned) was the power supply was 2 AA batteries (it is supplied with 2x 2,500 µamp Nimh batteries giving an advertised life of 20 hours, although I sometimes got 30 hours out of them in a car). If you run the batteries down just replace the batteries with a couple of Alkaline AAs and it keeps working for several hours.
I have a digital copy of the manual if you want it.

Thanks to all three, that's helpful.
The Columbus seems quite a pricey bit of kit (I couldn't find it for much less than £130) , when I see that I could pick up a mapping handheld for not a great deal more.
Food for thought ...

£55 from Here plus postage which probably puts it up to around £75 total, its a great device, just a shame no one in the UK seems to sell them at the moment - Mike
