Having been a Copilot user for many years via an HP Ipaq I thought it was time for a change.
My son has given me his early model Tom Tom XL which after about a month's use now refuses to start up.
It shows only a charging light but I have no idea if it is actually taking a charge or not, have tried both in and out of car charging with no joy.
It was previously working perfectly with no known faults.
There is no aparrent damage to the unit.
I have tried all the usual tricks to try and get it going but with no luck.
My question is is it worth repairing or should I just buy a new unit.
If it is worth repairing can someone recommend an honest reliable repairer.

Many thanks and a Happy New Year to all

I would say, before doing anything else, it is worth spending a couple of days with us here first, to see if we can breath life back into it ! Smile

First thing, can you tell us what "all the usual tricks" you've tried already are?

BTW, I think what you have is a "ONE XL", they only started calling it the "XL" on the current model. As this has a bearing on the software version you install, tell us the number on the bottom of the device (probably something like 4S00.006 or 4S00.007)

Andy - yes you are right it is a ONE XL, the reference on the unit is 4S00.000.

The fixes tried is the soft reset and swapping chargers etc to try and get it working with power.

My son did try and get it connected to he PC to do a hard reset but without any luck.

Any other ideas advice would be appreciated.
I know nothing about the Tom Tom gear.

From the 4S00.000 number, I reckon it has both an SD card and internal memory.
Is there a card in the slot at the moment?

It's possible the charger has gone high voltage and killed the hardware. Have a sniff around the USB socket on the One XL, is there a nasty burnt smell?

If you feel able and have access to a sensitive voltmeter, check the voltage on the two outermost pins on the USB plug of the car charger - there should be no more then 5.5 Volts between them. If it measures 12 volts, then it has terminally fried the One XL.

Does anything happen at all when you try to connect to the PC?

Andy - no smells and no signs of overcharging.
I did take the unit apart today and found it to be covered with red ink around the SD card slot which had ended up on the main PCB, so not sure what that's all about.
Cleaned it off and still the same.
Tried again to connect to PC and the unit does not register as being connected.
I may try a repair through www.satnavrepairservice.com as they only charge a tenner for a diagnosis and return if the item is unrepairable.
I was also tempted to buy a faulty unit with a damaged screen off Ebay and see if I can make up a single working unit.
