Hi Darren,
Yeah, that's normal - so what's the point of this thread?

Many thanks for all your input.
I have now resolved this problem by:
1. Downloading GPS update 3.03
2. Remove tomtom ~ gps using: settings, remove programs
3. ensure that TOMTOM is not running
4. Set Memorymap/fugawi to serial port 6 |

The point of this thread concersn the use of BT GPS receivers, previously, with TomTom 'Installed' not 'even loaded' or 'running' no other app could access the BT Serial Port as TomTom locked it for it's own exclusive access.
You said with TomTom 'loaded' which I took to mean 'running', in which case that is normal as only one app at a time can access a Com Port. If Memory-Map was active on COM1 then you couldn't launch TomTom and expect it to see COM1 and vice versa.
If you meant with TomTom 'Installed' but not running you cannot access COM1 with another app then that is another matter and my apologies as if that's the case I misunderstood. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi Darren,
Ah, I see - I thought you were announcing that TomTom wasn't locking the port so you could use other programs while it was running - I didn't reaslise that the locking problem was just having it installed.
Thanks!

It's interesting what someone said a few posts back about their IPAQ locking up now and freezing on the HP screen. I've had a similar question open with TomTom for a while now about backing up and restoring TomTom. Basically what happens is that if you backup a PDA (I'm using a 2210) and then hard-reset it (or take the battery out) and then restore the backup then it will freeze on the HP screen.
The last response from TomTom was that the 3.03 update should fix this, but I found it didn't, although it's possible that removing this TomTom ~ GPS thing might fix it.
What I did find that fixed that problem was if I didn't restore the TTBTDEV.DLL file, which rather sounds like a Bluetooth thing to me - maybe this is what they added to fix the drop-out problem in the first place. Anyway, still waiting for a reply from TomTom, so I'll let you know next year...! |

No sorry! That issue is the nature of COM Ports, it's the same with PC's, only one app at a time can control and communicate with a COM Port. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Strangely just after posting my previous message I did receive a reply from TomTom (they must be reading this forum!)
However it's in Dutch.... oh well! |

Have you tried using Babel Fish to translate it?

This doesn't work for me either. I have Memory Map as well as Tom Tom 3, and Memory Map can't access the COM port when driver 3.03 is loaded (and Tom Tom is not running).
Interestingly I seem to have another problem that others don't have in that I can't just select to remove the ~GPS Driver once to fix the problem. Since upgrading to Tom Tom 3, each time I click to remove the ~ GPS Driver it always removes the entire driver and not just the first bit of the program. I 'downgraded' to V2.07 of the driver which works with everything (again interestingly when I remove this I do have to select to remove it twice before it fully deinstalls) and have just gone back to this after trying V3.03 of the GPS Driver. |

...Nope, it appears that there is still a problem for at least some of us!
Maybe it depends on which COM port your pocket-PC uses?
I have an IPAQ 4150, which uses COM6. Removing Tomtom ~GPS gets MemoryMap working again, because this frees COM6: however, TomTom is then unusable until the 3.03 patch is reapplied... which kills MemoryMap again! |

Update: I have downloaded and installed the 2.07 driver (available from this site's Downloads section). This solves the problem: it doesn't lock the COM port (and this confirms that 3.03 is still doing this on the IPAQ 4150).
The 2.07 driver is slightly cranky, and doesn't reliably get the COM port after Memory-Map has been using it (which is presumably why later drivers lock it) - or, rather, Memory-Map doesn't reliably release the port. To get around this, after exiting Memory-Map go to Settings/System/Memory/Running Programs, highlight the Memory-Map entry and click Stop. This frees the resources that Memory-Map was using (including the COM port). |

Mine is an IPAQ 4150 too. Don't know if the problem with GPS Driver 3.03 is just with the 4150, but at least 2.07 still fixes things ! |

When I removed "Tomtom ~GPS" once, other apps (namely Navman STPro) are able to connect to the GPS (on COM 8 ).
I am a little confused about the announcement on the front page. Does it imply that this problem should not occur with the new version, even without the removal of "Tomtom ~GPS" . |

PS I had removed Tomtom ~GPS completely, ie twice, prior to installing the 3.03 update. |

I also had the problem that TT claimed the com port. V3.03 did not fix this. I asked the TT helpdesk for a solution, they didn't mention this version as a fix. The told me that currently only a registry-key change wil solve the problem.
I seached the internet for the key setting and found in a forum.
I use a ipaq 4150 and an emtact gps-mouse
the used BT-ports areinbound=8 en outbound =6.
communication goes via port 6 (on my configuration)!
use a registry-editor to make this change:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\Serial6\Dll = "BtCeIf.dll"
Be sure to use the correct case!!
if your configuration uses a different port (say com 8) make the change to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\Serial8\Dll = "BtCeIf.dll"
Another possibility is the use of the program GPSgate.
it claims the bt-com-port and creates 1 or more virtual ports.
programs can use one of these ports, or simply use a single port together!
I have not tested it properly yet, but it seems to work.
The advantage of this program is that you can use different gps-programs at the same time.
you can get a trial version of the program at : http://www.franson.biz/ |
