That says it clear excess files from the flash memory.
What does it mean by the flash memory, is this a segmented part of the memory you cannot access? If so what files and excess files exist there and is there any way to access this area of memory? If it just the normal memory, what again are the excess files? _________________ Drivelux |

There are 2 types of memory on the TT Satnavs. The usual memory, be it Internal, SD Card or Hard Drive, is the equivalent to the PC's Hard Drive.
There is also another, RAM memory, (usually 32MB or 64MB) that has the same use as the Plug-in Ram Modules on a PC.
The TT Devices can also use the Hard Drive equivalent for Paging Memory, much like a PC.
There are certain files that the TT uses that are placed in this "RAM memory" that are not always deleted when the Device is updated. After a while these can clog up the system.
Because this memory is not accessible to a PC it is not possible to manually delete from Windows. But the Clear Flash Tool does have that ability.
From the depths of memory, I think the files mostly had .mac extensions, but it could be more complex than that. _________________ Richard

Would running "Clear Flash" periodically as part of a maintenance program be a good thing? _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Couldn't hurt.........just as a reset of the unit can't hurt either.
It's 'return to factory defaults' that one wants to resort to reluctantly. _________________ David |

Thanks dhn, may just give those a try. I have noticed that the available RAM on my 730 is down to about 12mb and Oldboy's excellent explaination helped me see the light.

That icon really scares me, it should be behind several iron bars to prevent accidental touching. Thankfully, I have never had to use it, but I would like to think that there are several "Are You Sure?", "Really, Really Sure?" screens to go through before it actually nukes the TT. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Thanks for the link Andy_P.
It did nothing to allay my fears though. Unless I'm forced to, I still have no intention of going near that icon. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

I've had a TomTom 730T for nearly a year. I've updated the Application about 5 times and I've updated the map 4 times.
My current configuration is this:
App: 8.351 (9982/090518)
OS: 315187
GPS: V1.20
Boot: 5.5120
Map: Western and Central Europe 2GB, V835.2419 (1825.1 MB)
I've cleared the route and done a soft reset of the unit. The RAM details are:
64 MB RAM (free:12.6 MB)
Is this a good or bad free space of RAM?
At what point do people wait for the free RAM to get to, before running the Clear Flash Tool?
After running the Clear Flash Tool, how much free RAM should you expect to get?

Privateer, As an experiment, I stripped my 730 back to bare bones (took it back to Navcore 8.002 with W&C Maps v800, removed all POI's and other custom stuff) & ran Clear Flash. My free RAM is now showing 19.1MB of 64mB. TT's performance appears to be the same as before doing all this.
When I previously noted my Free RAM as 12MB, my 730 was running without any problems so I don't think having 12MB is a problem. I was just curious to know if running "Clear Flash" occaisionaly could be considered advantageous. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Is this a good or bad free space of RAM? | Much like a PC the Free RAM will fluctuate all the time. It will move blocks to and from the Virtual Memory Paging File on the SD Card, or Internal Memory, as it deems necessary. _________________ Richard

Thanks for doing that experiment AliOH, very useful to get some concrete figures.
Privateer, I always think of ClearFlash as something you only really need to do if you have specific problem. But whenever I've tried using it, either to help someone on the forums or just for the hell of it, it's never done any harm, but never made any noticeable difference either! |

Hi AliOnHols,
Many thanks for doing that experiment. Most useful.

Yes you're right. It's just that it would be nice to have a few pointers to say that if free RAM is above a certain amount then running the Clear Flash Tool would be a waste of time. Likewise it would be nice to know that if the free RAM (or percentage of free RAM) was below a certain limit then running the Clear Flash Tool would be useful to do.

I don't think Clear Flash will "release memory" as such.
See the Function mentioned Here.
Also see the reference to another program from SatNav Shop, but check with them that it is suitable with the latest software versions. _________________ Richard
