my friend has just given me his tomtom one to see if i can help bring it back to life, so over to you guys.
it all started the other day by not being able to switch it off. now when plugged into the mains the green light is illuminated but the machine will not switch on. the screen remains lifeless and black.
i have tried the reset button and paper clip but to no avail.
is there any hope for this unit or is it just dustbin fodder?
willing to try anything really.
many thanx. |

Take the SD card out and put it in a card reader then use Windows Explorer to view the card, if there are files and folders on the card (as there should be) make a full backup of the card to your computer.
Next delete all the lose files that are on the card but NOT in any folders DO NOT DELETE ANY FOLDERS OR THEIR CONTENTS.
Put the card back in the device and switch it on connected to the computer and use TomTom Home to update the software, this will install a new application to the device after which it should (hopefully) work - Mike |

the only yellow folders i have starts with: .Trashes and ends with: zip.
there are 12 in all. there is also the red hands and tomtom file and install TomTom HOME

update
i deleted all the files that have little blue window type icons next to them. connected tomtom to pc and attempted to switch on, but still nothing. black screen and green power light on. in fact it might be my imagination but even the on off switch feels as if it does not have a click 'on' if you know what i mean.
i'm wondering now if the actual problem is a faulty switch as this all started by not being able to power it off??
any ideas.
thanks again. |

Go to Richards web site (Oldboy) Here and download the TomTom One v7,166 software then install this to the device using WinRar (there will be a readme text file in the download explaining how to install the software).
With this on the unit does it do anything? - Mike |

hi mike
downloaded what you suggested (there was no readme file) but i extracted the download with winrar and added it to the tomtom card and still nothing. the unit does not do anything other than showing the green light. on your first post to me you said about deleting loose files, were these all those ending with a .mac, .so, .ver extention. basically everything not in one of the 12 yellow folders listed in order as .Trashes, itn, licences, logging, raster,Script, statdata, TomTom HOME install.app, TomTom-Cfg, voices, Western Europe, zip.
i'm just wondering more now whether it is simply not switching on?? |

It could well be a dead on/ off switch, short of taking the unit to bits you will never know, and even if you take it appart you might not be able to get a replacement on/ off switch - Mike |

may as well look at the inside of it as i could also do with the silver bezel for my unit that is badly marked, but in good condition on this ONE. do you know what screwdriver i need to purchase to take it apart and can it be got from Maplins?
thanks again. |

My One XL uses Torx T8 screws so probably same on your One and Maplin definitely has a driver. One tip from me is after removing screws, use a credit card to slide between two halves to separate without damage. |

Are you sure it's sufficiently charged (2-3 hrs minimum)?
Green light ONLY shows power getting to the unit, not that it's charging. |

To add to franb comment regarding charging did you do the 'long' reset?
From TomTom site:
To reset your TomTom device, do the following:
1.Charge your device.
Charge your device for at least 2 hours. Make sure the charging light on your device is on .
2.Remove the SD card
If your device uses an SD card, remove it.
3.Reset your device.
Use a straightened paper clip, or something similar, to push the reset button for 15 seconds.
4.Turn your device on.
Press the On/off button for at least 5 seconds.
5.Insert the SD card
If your device uses an SD card, insert the SD card. |

There's no specific 'short' or 'long' reset.... you just need to hold the reset button down long enough for it to completely switch off. TT are just being over-cautious saying 15 seconds. |

Andy, I agree that according to TomTom there is only one reset method which is what I referred to as the 'long' reset where they specifically say remove the card. I've got the impression that some people don't do that and also don't hold the reset switch for long enough.
I though it was worth mentioning? |
