|

Hi, can anyone recommend a 'hand-held' sat-nav for use in Western France.
I would like to use it for exploring cycle paths etc, also some walking, and finding way back to resort!
I have looked around, but am confused about the mapping software / basemap descriptions.
For example, would there be a gps map available for a portable sat-nav (hand held device) showing cycle paths, walks etc in Western France?
Any advice / comments appreciated. |

You may want to take a look at the Active 10 by SatMap .
They are now selling selected regions of France at 1:50k. I can't view their images for some reason - so I can't tell you if cycle tracks are marked. _________________ Phil |

Thanks for the info phil.
Tell me, I am new to this kind of hand-held device, and I know you can't tell it where you want to go and let it guide you there like the one in my car, but will it get me back to my starting location in unfamiliar territory?
(I hope this Q. is not too stupid!) |

Memory-map are advertising 1:25,000 maps of France for use with their systems.
For walking, you will not get 'turn-by-turn' maps (like a driving Satnav (TomTom etc)) but you will get an image of a map (IGN for France) on which you can trace your route.
A GPS without a moving map will usually have a 'track-back' facility to allow you to retrace your steps. One with a moving map on screen - Satmap, Memory Map etc- will have drawn a line on the map for where you have been and you follow it back. |
