On my daily trip to work on the A3 to London I am plagued by gatso warnings for cameras on the other side of the road. Is there any way to turn these off? |

Welcome to the forum, the database from PGPSW does contain directional data for those devices that can support this feature, sadly TomTom and Garmin do not offer this capability when using third party POI files.
You didn't mention which device you are using so I only mentioned the main two PND suppliers, if you have something else please let us know what you are using - Mike |

By the way, now that I have searched on the word 'directional' I can see the other posts on the subject so please feel free to delete this thread if you like. It was the one word I had not thought of when looking for the answer!! |

Personally I don't mind the opposite warning as it reminds me for my return journey, especially if it's a new one. _________________ (If it ain't broke, I can soon fix it) |

Speaking as a verifier, I find it quite reassuring - I know that the camera is in the database!
With the TomTom one which is supposed to be directional now, it sometimes ignores the "other way" and sometimes doesn't, so you've no idea what's going on! |

I'm also suffering from the same issue (Garmin Nuvi). Surely there's a way to pinpoint the camera location co-ordinates on the correct right side of the carriageway? Some are already on the correct side anyway. |

If you are referring to the PGPSW database then there is no way to do directional alerts reliably.
Some cameras are reversible so need to alert in both directions.
Even if you place the cameras on the right side of the road Garmin don't allow the Proximity Alerts to distinguish between different sides of the road that closely. Besides most cameras are already pin pointed on the right side of the road.
Finally as PGPSW already collects the directional data if anything where possible to allow directional alerts PGPSW would be doing it.

Whilst it is possible to pin point the location of a camera it isn't much use due to quite a few being reversible so the heading data is vital to prevent either a warning when not relevant or no warning when it is really required.
The PGPSW database has this information but the manufcturers such as TomTom and Garmin do not make provision for it within their programming code - Mike |

Pinpointing the icon in exactly the right place won't make any difference.
Both the TomTom and Garmin models have a built in "capture range" which it uses to decide if a POI is near enough or "on route" to trigger the alert. There's nothing we as users can do to change this.
An extreme example is how TomTom have decided that the slip road and subsequent roundabout off a motorway junction is all part of the main road, so a camera located on the roundabout will sometimes still trigger an alert when you continue on the motorway |

Bummer, as they say! The Garmin does know which direction you're travelling in though - which is why I'd have thought it could figure out the camera you are moving towards. |

All GPS navigation devices can derive heading data as its built in to the data stream they receive, directional warning from third party databases is something very few major manufacturers have added to their devices or software - would be nice if they did though - Mike |

It does and it can, but ONLY for Garmins own Cyclops Camera Database.... which is great for directional alerts but poor for reliable data. Same for TomTom too... |

I've no experience of the Cyclops, but I have been running the TomTom "so-called" directional" database alongside the PGPSW one and the TomTom one STILL regularly "bongs" for cameras in the other direction.
So along with it missing loads of cameras anyway, I don't see it having much going for it at all! |

Problem also comes up when you change the warn on route only, as this can sometimes not warn of mobiles etc on motorway bridges, if it was submitted on the road they are parked on, so I never tick warn on route and just do a quick glance when it boings, just to make sure its not a new one on my normal routes, can be irritating, but better safe than sorry. |
