‘Motorcycle detection system’ on roads by Easter
By Steve Farrell
Politics & the law
17 February 2009 11:53
A new surveillance system designed to track movements of motorcyclists on the roads will be operational by Easter, MCN can reveal.
The technology can tell motorcycles apart from other vehicles, measure their speeds and will be able to read number plates under plans. Data such as the routes taken by individual motorcyclists along with time and date will be collected and kept even if they have committed no offence.
The £100,000 project has prompted civil rights groups to express grave concerns about the potential for invasion of motorcyclists’ privacy.
Cut and paste from MCN of 17th Feb 2009.
Not sure if this is what it is all about
Edit, by me.
That didn't work as it was supposed to. There is a lot more to the article. _________________ Triumph Tbird 1700. And now a Bonnie T100. |

Sorry but I don't believe this. Unless you can provide evidence to back this up? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Some may not be, but the vast majority of those that pass through my village in large numbers while visiting the south coast travel at twice the speed limit and more, intimidating other road users, and making so much noise that we are unable to relax in our gardens - and this doesn't only apply to those unfortunate enough to live on the main road!

To be honest, it wouldn't bother me if they did, especially if it helped them to catch these maniacs and make our roads safer. I don't break the law, and I have nothing to hide. It seems they are no longer able to police the roads adequately, so maybe these cameras are the alternative.

You may be surprised to learn that we don't all buy MCN, so we're unable to SEE PAGE 30!
Edited to add: I see you've added a link while I was typing this reply! _________________ Anita

Ok, so that's a box used for traffic census. Where's the conspiracy here? Still no evidence of this database you claim? It's complete hokum. _________________ Darren Griffin |

All the more reason ,as you will know from all the changes that have gone into traffic policeing in recent years (LITTLE boxs REPLACED TRAFFIC POLICE) and will continue to do so.
No offence meant to any one on this forum.

Ok, that is a useful start. But as has already been mentioned in this thread, the evil roadside boxes are nothing more than traffic census kit.
I suspect this is a case of 2+2 = 2000 here! _________________ Darren Griffin |

widowmakerv2 - What do you think / know the "database" will be for?
As far as i can see it'll be used to see where bikers go and will be used to make changes to roads and there layouts for safety reasons. That seems like a good thing to me as it'll help them prioritise the work according to traffic density.
Other that that it also doubles as a SPECS speed camera system, just this time rear facing.
I think the story sensationalises the facts a lot and adds a dash of paranoia and "Big Brother" into the mix.... If you are not speeding you have nothing to fear. What else would they do with the data if you are not speeding? |
