Hi all,

Perilously close to choosing the Garmin Nuvi 200w s my first sat nav. I've read up on this over the weekend and feel it would be a good choice. The other contender is the TomTom One XL - despite having a poor battery life (which is a biggie for me - I'm not too keen on having that trail of wire over the dash) it has the itinerary/pre planning facility which the 200w doesn't have.
If I'm honest, I'm not entirely sure if I'd miss that function anyhow and perhaps there are ways around this (waypoints for example).
I'd like a feature so that between points A and B I can add a point to go 'via', (say a town or village thereby creating a scenic route) in effect a pre planned route...or am I missing something out?

Many thanks.

No you're not really missing anything, except that until recently the nuvi's that didn't offer route planning were limited to a single waypoint. That's changed on the newer 2X5' which now allow several waypoints to be added, a poor man's custom routing in effect. Many NA users noticed 260's arriving with most of the newer 2x5 interface the past few months, and those also allow multiple vias.

So effectively I can get round this via using multiple 'vias/waypoints'?.
I know of one route (Manchester to Nottingham/Derbyshire border) which on a sat nav would suggest a route via motorways (I know of friends who have visited us and the came this route), but the A6 is much more scenic route despite adding 20 mins or so (mind you the bulk of the Journey is taken getting out of the A6 in Stockport...but that's another story...!). However I'd like to know how as a Sat Nav Newbie/Layman could 'tell' the 200W to travel the other route: I could enter a town in the middle of the route as a Via, but that could be anywhere in the town and not the way I'd normally route through (taking me on a detour of the back streets of that particular town). The only thing I can think of is to add several way points on the main roads through such towns/villages (along the A6 as an example) then save this as a favourite route for other times. I know this route very well so this doesn't really apply - just wondering how I would do this on other less well known routes.

Oh - 2x5 = widescreen versions?
NA ?

Many thanks gatorguy.

Unfortunately you can't save a destination with intermediate via points as a "route". For that you would need one of the 7xx, 8xx models. The 750 and 760 are very affordable now and quite a solid device.

Ah ok - I was speaking with a friend who suggested the pre route planning is a very worthy feature. Is the TomTom One XL's itinerary planner effectively a pre planning route option or is it merely a waypoint/via function termed differently?
Those 750/760's are nice but a touch over my budget at the moment (only decided to finally get hold of a sat nav following a trial with one this weekend.

Cheers.

Here in the US we can buy a new 750 for $185 at Amazon. You might check an online retailer.
