|

I have just bought a Garmin nuvi 5000 unit and want to hard wire the mount into my dash. Contacted Garmin but they would give me no help at all, saying they didn't support hard wiring! Funny, I am sure I bought a unit years ago supplied with bare end wiring.
Has any one hard wired a nuvi unit and can give me any advice/warnings?
I was planning to cut off the plug supplied with the the power cable and route it to a new fused connection.
Thanks |

Stop right there! The 12v - 5v circuitry is in the cigarette lighter plug. Chop that off and you'll be feeding 12v into the nuvi, not good unless you like the smell of burning!
Easiest method is to hard wire a cigarette lighter extension lead (Maplins have 'em for a couple of quid). Cut off the plug, wire to a fused accessory supply in the fusebox and then plug the nuvi charge lead into that out of site behind the dash. Tape it all up and bob's your uncle.

Managed to get the cigar lighter plug apart on my 265 with the same idea - glad I did, as it's got a PCB in it to bring the voltage down from 12 to 5... Don't know what'd happen if you plugged 12V straight into the unit, but I guess it'd be expensive! I reckon the simplest option is to get a cigar socket with bare ends, wire that in, plug the garmin adapter into that, then hide the whole lot in the dash.

I have a 3 way extension accessory lead which plugs into the rear lighter socket, the wire under the carpet and the 3 way head is held onto the side of the transmission tunnel by velcro pads, phone charger goes in 1, and the Garmin power lead in 2, 3 is spare, the garmin lead is then concealed under the dash and up inside the rubber door seal. A cheap, simple and cheerful solution to the alternative of having wires all over. |

Wish I'd thought to ask before I chopped the plug off my 3 week old Nuvi
120 pounds worth of repair later and I'm back on the road!! |
