|
|
Hi all
I've just bought a nuvi and was told by the retailer that I could update my maps for free in the first 60 days. I have checked on garmin.co.uk and there is a map update available, but it wants £59.99 to download it.
Does anyone know how I take up the FREE 60 day update offer?
Many thanks

Have you used the sat nav yet? You need to get a good signal lock and drive with the unit for a few minutes over 20 mph to set the date of first use, otherwise it uses some date from last year. If you haven't used it set it up in the car and wait for it to get a lock. Then go for a good 15 minutes drive. Don't need a route planned.
Then try the update again. |

first welcome you may actually have the latest up to date maps however the way to check if your able to get a free map update is for you to 'register' your unit online at the Garmin website with it attached to your pc/mac with the usb cable. Follow instructions and the website will "look" for your attached gps and check serial number etc and tell you if your due an update+give option to download/install (long process unless you have fast connection so may want to consider option given to buy dvd instead). Be aware that free map update is available for 60 days from the unit first getting a "Satellite" fix !So keep in mind if the unit has been used previously or you are in any doubt that it may have been used previously ! I hope this helps, let us know how you get on.
Rgds

I had the same problem. I had to ring Garmin support who were very helpful and the free update became available on their website in a matter of hours.
The real problems start with the 3gb download. It takes 3+ hours on my 2mb/s broadband, and with corrupted files and freeze ups you could be in for a long haul!! |

Hi guys thanks for the replies. I have registered my nuvi and have driven with a sat lock for quite some time prior to registering.
When I followed the instructions on the Garmin website to check for map updates and it returned an update but wanted £59.99.
Guess I'll have to e mail Garmin and see what they have to say. |

I have the same experience as Arkwright.
I just bought a new nuvi 770 and cannot find the free map update. The garmin website is pretty bad (by today's standards). I have registered my 770 and it wants me to shell out £60 on the 2009 Europe map.
My 770 has City Navigator Europe NT 2008 installed so I would think that under Garmin's numaps guarantee I should get a free update to 2009 maps.???
I registered the 770 on the Garmin website 20 Feb and drove with it for the first time on 21 Feb. Since then I have connected it to the PC and signed in to the garmin website daily but still no sign of the free update. I am using XP sp3 with IE7 and Chrome
Today, I contacted Garmin through the support webform. Let's see what happens...
Not too impressed so far.
This is my first nuvi. I bought my first Garmin in 1997 - a GPS II (looks like a GPS V but without any maps!) My first gps was a professional series 1991 Magellan, the size of a small briefcase, with solely a LAT LONG readout. |

If you used Chrome to try and email Garmin Customer Service or tech support, it may not have actually completed the service. Use IE instead. Chrome and Garmin's tech support system don't play well together. _________________ Garmin 1695 / 255 / 760 w/MSN - Droid w/Google nav + Navigon - Navigon 8100T - Dakota10 - GPSMap76C - GeoMate Jr. |

Just a quick update folks...
I have just recieved a message from Garmin support telling me that my brand new Garmin Nuvi which I purchased fro Halfords on 21st Feb 2009, has a First Satelite Acquired date of 9th June 2007
So what's that all about? I have e mailed Garmin support with a copy of my proof of purchase and my Nuvi serial number and await their response.
Could I be in possession of a reconditioned unti perhaps? If so, surely Halfords have a duty to inform me prior to purchase.
I'll keep you updated.

Hi Paul
I have read your post and set up my Garmin as I left the store I bought it from. I got in my vehicle, acquired a sat lock and drove for 60 miles back to my home which took about 80 minutes.
So still don't know what's going on...

I just called the UK help desk where the guy explained the reason I cannot get a free nuMaps update download was that I had registered my unit on the Garmin website BEFORE I had actually driven with it.
He said it is quite clear on the Garmin website that you have to use the device before you can qualify for the free map update.
Well, I DISAGREE.
If you go to Mapping Solutions - Garmin nuMaps - nuMaps Guarantee
it states: "Simply register your new Garmin sat-nav at my.garmin.com and if a map update becomes available within 60 days of its first use..."
Simply register.
On the Product Registration page https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/marketing/register.htm
It states: "Register your products* now to take advantage of the latest updates and special offers. Don't delay."
Register now. Don't delay.
It does not say: MAKE SURE YOU DRIVE WITH THE DEVICE BEFORE YOU REGISTER.
Does anyone have the Garmin UK Customer Support postal address with a contact name? I have googled it but with no luck.
The customer support guy said that I now have to provide an invoice to Garmin before I can get the free update. This is inconvenient as it was a gift from my Dad and now I am out of the country on holiday wanting to use the blooming thing with the latest maps. |

Unfortunately other peoples experience has been that they need to produce the receipt and then they get the free update. Not sure why it should fail like that but occasionally the system will. Persist with Garmin and you should be rewarded. |

Thanks for your encouragement, PaulB2005. I faxed the Garmin Europe address listed on their website with a text based on my posting above and I received a reply by email shortly afterwards from a Product Support Supervisor who was able to rectify the situation to my satisfaction.
So kudos to Garmin for speedy customer support but it is really not rocket science to have avoided all this wasted time in the first place. Clearly I am not the first person to have registered my new nuvi before using it.
Any news with your resolution of the 60 day free map update, Arkwright? |
