|
|
Hi
I have a TomTom GO 500 and wish to 'hard wire' this into my car.
It came with a cigarette adaptor - which I wish to cut off and wire in.
But, I am left with three wires Red, Black & White.
Can any body please tell me which wire is which (positive, negative & the 'third' wire???)
Thanks in advance

Don't try powering the device from the cables, the plug that goes in your ciggy socket contains voltage regulation to maintain a steady 5V - if you connect 12V from the car straight to the device it will light up for a few mili-seconds followed by a very costly burning smell.
You would be far better to fit a second ciggy socket to the vehicle and plug the charger plug/ lead assembly in to this, then hide the whole lot behind the dash - Mike |

And if you have cut off the plug then you'll need to either be very careful in re-connecting it or you'll need a new one. Don't tape the wires, disassemble the charger and re-solder. if you don't know how, throw it away as you will highly likely blow your device if done incorrectly.
The third wire is a 'sense' wire, see here.
As Mike has suggested, get a lighter extension lead from Maplins for a few quid, cut off the plug end and wire that to a fused 12v accessory supply. Then plug the TomTom charger into that and secure out of sight behind the dash.

Thanks for the advice - much appreciated.
PS - Sorry Mike
I didn't realise I had posted multiple threads -
I clicked preview then submit (once) - but was surprised myself to see two identical posts from me |

Don't worry about that, its easy done at first! - if you need a new charger lead assuming you have cut the original up, let me know as I have one in the spares box and you are only down the road - Mike |
