I don't own this cradle myself (yet), however a few months ago I asked Carcomm themselves this exact question, and one of them replied back to me as follows:
"There is some space between the TomTom and the cradle, the sound is a little muffled but it’s not very noticeable ( also depends a little on how well the user’s hearing is of course). We never had any complaints on the sound being too low while using the cradle."
As the cradle does provide audio-out cables, I guess the point is to have the TomTom's sound going through your car stereo, rather than using the TomTom's built-in speakers.
Cheers,

The audio out works for directions and music but not for handsfree calls which is my main concern as that is quiet enough to start off with.
Thanks for the info though.

I'll second that.
I use the BRODIT mount for my 720 but the 'phone sound level is much too quiet for my hearing. I also used the 660 before - beautiful 'phone quality. _________________ Phil |

From my usage I'd say the Carcomm doesn't impede the sound or volume quality at all. It won't of course help with the low volume level of the hands-free if that is the issue though, but it won't worsen it. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks Darren, looks like the best solution to me as then
Although the Brodit mount looks a lot smaller it doesn't have the audio pass through...yes, i know I'm idle but it also means I can have the cables permanently tidy and not have to worry about the aux cable any more.
At the end of the day, if the handsfree volme isn't loud enough I can always resort to the bluetooth ear piece...just seems a shame TomTom can't resolve the issue and let me use the car speakers when Garmin can :-) |

Looks quite nice & would be reasonable value (IMO) at around £20-25 but £50!? Not a specific dig at this product as all of these after-market solutions seem horrendously over priced for what they are. Which at the end of the day is a few pieces of plastic & a couple of common connectors & cables. |

One quirky problem that has beset me: If I put the unit in the cradle fully and turn on - or - leave in the cradle and turn on - the unit will start to boot up and then switch off. Sometimes when it does stay on the TMC Traffic is not recognised and stays off too.
The only way I can get it both to turn on AND recognise the TMC is to turn the unit on prior to docking and place in the dock (or push down) once the maps have fully loaded.
A strange one that.
My unit has been hardwired in by the way. _________________ TT Go 920T

I can't say I have ever experienced any such issue with my 520/720's. _________________ Darren Griffin |
