Thanks for the info Darren (Finbar )
I'll persevere until it loosens then rather than spray with the WD40.
Tell me, as it's unlikely that anyone removes the cradle between journeys, what do you do, if anything, to disguise the cradle?
I've put a woolly hat over mine for the time being. _________________ TT Go 920T

I haven't fone anything, it's on the console where you'd expect to find a phone cradle and looks pretty anonymous but if I ever did park somwhere that concerned me I'd do as you've done! _________________ Darren Griffin |

I just hold the bottom of the CNM167 unit with my left hand and pull the TT920 out with my right hand via it's top edge. Is the extra connector on the CNM168 causing a tighter fit? _________________ Malcolm |

Maybe Malcolm - though it needn't have - in the event we couldn't fit the audio input:
The engineer who I commissioned assured me there was no input for my model of factory fit stereo and in any event, getting to the back of the unit on my inbuilt, was a huge task.
I weighed the pros and cons and left it unfitted for now.
Still love the cradle. Only one downside - where it is fitted with the dashboard proclip, I obscure a fraction of the bottom right screen with my steering wheel. _________________ TT Go 920T

A little late now but in such cases the LHD version is always an option as it places the ProClip that bit further away assuming your car has an asymmetric dash of course! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Cheers Darren, I'll have to live with it - the dash isn't symmetrical but not too distracting unless you bunch your fists in a ten to two steering position.
One final £50+ question, if you pick this up:
If any of us upgrade to a 540-940 Live model, will the cradle still be fit for purpose? If ok, will we need to modify it at all to accomodate the latest models?

If you purchase a cradle for the x20 or x30 devices then upgrade to an x40 you will have to sell the holder, the x40 has a very different mounting system and is supplied with a half decent active mount in the box. For a fully decent mount (one with all the required connection points on it) you have to purchase the accessory x40 mount from TomTom.
Perhaps the third party manufacturers will catch up with the x40 and offer a solution, but the supplied mount is very neat and works well, this might reduce the third party offerings. TomTom have also shown a different accessory mount on their web site which looks very similar to the standard Brodit type attachment with four screw holes, this would be handy for countries/ states where windscreen mounting isn't permitted - Mike |

All we need now then is a further mod, so that the cables to the base are routed optionally from the rear, making a really neat install, rather than the cables showing at the bottom of the base. |

Belated thanks for that advice Mike!
One further point: The tilt'n'swivel bracket can work loose over time as it is a screw controlled tension (as mine has). This is a pain as you have to remove the 4 fiddly bracket screws/nuts from the cradle and tighten the adjusting screw - and then refit the cradle.
Better than it being 'broke' though - which at first I thought it was! _________________ TT Go 920T

Not if you assemble it the correct way round If you attache the swivel with the screw head facing the mount it is accessible behind the foam pad on the cradle. Peel of pad, tighten screw, re-apply pad. Job done. _________________ Darren Griffin |

You know Darren - I've glanced at that pad (wondering why it's there) without ever realising the obvious truth of what you've just said.
Next time, if there is a next time, I'll...er...remove the pad first, like you suggest! _________________ TT Go 920T

It's not mentioned in the instructions so how were you to know. I've only ever had to tighten the screw once but it makes it a lot easier that way. _________________ Darren Griffin |

|
|
I received a 730 from my significant other for Christmas as she was fed up with me complaining about the routes my Garmin 660 was choosing :-)
So far I'm pretty happy with it (the 730), apart from the fact that the handsfree comes through the internal speaker (I could plug the Garmin into the AUX sockect in the car and that meant my handsfee conversations came through the car speakers)
I'm looking at getting a decent mount the Tomtom as I'm used to the proper mount on the dash where the Garmin has lived for the last 18 months and I know I'll get sick of connecting 3 cables everytime I get in the car... I like the look of this one, but as the internal speaker is at the back of the device and the handsfree is quiet enough as it is, does the fact that this mount appears to cover the speaker mean I won't be able to hear anyone?
Would love to know what other people think.
Thanks
Steve |
