Would I be correct in saying that the only difference between the TT XL (Europe) and the TT XL V2 (Europe) is that the V2 has 22 European countries. Otherwise the maps are the same level ? _________________ TomTom 720

NO, not if you are comparing the original machine (proper name TomTom One XL, now being referred to as the One XL Classic)) and the new machine - TomTom XL with (no mention of "One" and also known as the TomTom XL 22 series ), there are quite a few other differences.
I think the main ones are....
The "old" machine has an SD card slot, the "new" doesn't
The mounts are obviously different
The original had Bluetooth (for Plus Data only) the new has no BT at all.
The original could take an external aerial the new on can't
The original had a Traffic option, the new one doesn't. |

You can use Traffic with the new XL but this requires the use of the mini USB style RDS-TMC receiver.
The newer XL is also thinner, has a better screen and better speaker - Mike |

Cheers Andy...and Mike, as always...
Whilst I am taking a more casual view, taking my time, to buying my Sat Nav thanks to Tom Tom and the 8.3 debacle...I would wait until they sort it out. I have started casting my eye around. Navman, Garmin have all appeared in my browser and considering all I want is a decent Sat Nav box with preferably TTS as the only "extra" its not easy to compare. The 720 is STILL attractive becuase of price and that TTS but comparing TT models with so many old...and new ones currently available is not easy. Perhaps I should just buy anotehr Nokia E61 and load my TT6 on it and be done with it all...but I do like the idea of a dedicated stand alone sat nav box that my wife can use as well.
The old style One V4 TT appeals because its cheap, has the maps I want and for just over £100 is a bargain....but the new XL V2 has a better screen and is only another £47 more for widescreen
Sorry to be pussy footing around and I appreciate your patience with all the questions. _________________ TomTom 720

It was very kind of you not to tell us to read the question properly!
I've now spotted you were actually asking about the MAP detail...
Personally, I'd go for an x20 model as there are some amazing bargains to be had. Back it up on day one, then you can update it for free to have the absolute latest software and maps, exactly like a Go x30. If you don't like the changes, go back to where it was when you bought it (which is pretty damn good). |

Ahem...it did cross my mnd but to be honest the responses were entertaining anyway.....as always.
Mike said the same as yourself regarding the x20 range and the maps. The only thing making me hesitate is the Navcore problem. For myself I won't use the BT or FM but do like the TTS option with the oft mentioned quality fo the maps. The Xl and XL V2 appeal because of the newness, screen quality but I'm getting the firm message that the x20 maps/mapping is better...probably not by much ?....but better.
I also note that Navigon...who get good write ups for map and route quality ..and, support are discounting already for Xmas...see Amazon. With them you can get TTS for £15 for devices that don't have it. A good idea I think...
Overall...I keep getting guided to the x20.......so I know it must be good..all current issues excepted and I can leave it on the old software....for now. _________________ TomTom 720

While I prefer the screen on the 730, the 720 is one of the best choices you can make, as you can find it refurbished or heavily discounted in many places, and you can simply just upgrade the maps. Both are great choices, I think.
As for the XL, I use the XL 330S, which I like better than the XL-S (but the XL-S has expandable memory).
Just all depends on what features you prefer. |

True. I like the idea of the SD slot for flexibility. I have just bought another Nokia E61 to replace the one I lost and will put my TT6 on that for my car but having seen so many sat navs and read the posts here I still want a dedicated sat nav that all the family can use without taking my phone.... _________________ TomTom 720
