I carry out a full Windows Backup of my 720 before installing a new map etc and again afterwards. Then every few weeks or whenever I copy the MapSettings cfg. file which I save. That file can be very handy if one has deleted a favourite or some other info. |
I quite agree!

But, I have done it many times. Just to be sure I have just done it again.

Afraid I have to disagree!
I don't know what you are doing but you simply cannot paste a file inside another file. Computers don't work like that.
If you are right-clicking on the desired .cfg file, selecting "copy" then hovering the mouse over the old file in the destination folder and selecting "paste", then that is just exactly the same as hovering *anywhere* in the destination folder and selecting "paste". |

Hi Andy_P
But I do exactly that. And when I click paste it asks me’ if I wish to replace the existing file’ and I click ‘Yes’. And that’s it.
By the way, I have a shot of the dialogue box that comes up when I click paste but I haven't sussed out how to get it onto this Forum page.

Trevor, you are doing exactly as Andy said. You are replacing the file and not pasting it into the original one. You will get the same effect if you place your curser anywhere in the folder, as long as you don't have another folder highlighted or you will put your file in there and it won't work. _________________ TT Go Essential |

Thanks Calomax for an alternative way of putting it.
Trevor.. don't worry about it, I think we are just talking at cross-purposes and getting bogged down in the words used.
What we are *all* doing, is pasting the new file into the folder, which means the old file of the same name gets replaced.
I was just trying to say that that isn't "pasting the file into the file" - which is impossible. |

Hi Andy_P and Calomax
Yes, perhaps I should have explained slightly differently. I take the blame.
Anyway, at least we all agree that we can replace lost favourites etc onto our Tomtom from a previous backed up Cfg. file. And I think that we also agree that that simple task can save a lot of head banging. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

I have just updated my Go 500 to version 7.90 and I too have lost my favorites I have copied and pasted the mapsettings.cfg file from my backup and I still have no favorites. Also it's now going in a ' continuous loop' of starting up, crashing then restarting and crashing again and again.
Can anyone advise please
I'll try reloading my backup and see if that gets it working again.

This has been noted elsewhere.
Have a look at This Thread, and specifically AndyP's Post. _________________ Richard

Oh bug*er !!!
Maybe I'll just have to note them all down when I get the backup reinstalled and set them up again |

Thanks for that. But, my GO 500 just won't work with version 7.9
As I mentioned above it goes into a loop of crashing and restarting if I have it, so I have gone back to 7.162.
It's probably my device that's faulty because it's always been prone to doing that if it's overloaded...for instance I have Tripmaster on it and that sometimes causes it to crash.
BTW is there any way of installing a new processor because I think the fault lies there. |

You cannot start swapping the internal parts, how much spare capacity is there on the storage card as the device needs some space to work with? - Mike |

I have two cards a 512mb and a 1gb The 512mb has 386mb free. The 1gb card has 578mb free.
I get the same result (crashing) with both. |
