Press release: 09.10.08 Google’s Android Could Signal a Tipping Point in Smartphones

NEW YORK - October 9, 2008 -
If Google’s ambitions for its recently-launched Android smartphone operating system are fully realized, the new OS will represent a tipping point in attitudes towards the whole concept of a smartphone. This tectonic shift will affect consumers, handset manufacturers and, most critically, mobile network operators.

According to ABI Research director Kevin Burden, “If Android is to become the ubiquitous mobile phone platform that Google and the Open Handset Alliance hope it will be, it will be because operators and handset OEMs recognize the value to their own business models of using standard platforms, not because wireless subscribers clamor for feature-rich phones, much less an Android-based phone.”

The current smartphone market accounts for only 14% of worldwide handsets. That doesn’t help Google’s aspirations to have a platform used by a wide population to whom they can market their services. Google needs to convince handset manufacturers to replace the real-time operating systems that now power the majority of mobile phones. In the smartphone market of the future, users won’t always be aware of what they’re buying: they will buy simply because they’re in the market for a phone, not specifically a smartphone.

The challenge is to convince operators that having more phones in their lineups and more subscribers using those phones based on standardized operating systems is good for them. Standardization delivers easier manageability at the technical level and greater ease in marketing services to all their subscribers.

“The smartphone market has been moving in this direction for some time now,” Burden continues. “If Android is a success, it may be the tipping point that marks the start of a profound change in the smartphone market.”

ABI Research’s “Smartphone and OS Markets” http://www.abiresearch.com/products/market_research/Smartphones report provides a thorough overview of the smartphone market, concentrating on key developments in both device feature set expansion and the evolving software landscape. The report covers important topics including specific features and technologies that enhance the user interface, in addition to the encroachment of open source software into the smartphone domain.

It forms part of the firm’s Mobile Devices Research Service.

Garmin Sat Navs to give Historical Audio-Tour of France

New GPS software, covering the whole of France, provides in-car running commentaries via Garmin Sat Navs
Fascinating audio descriptions, automatically trigger on the Sat Nav’s loud speaker within a few miles of each location
All the benefits of a personal tour-guide within a credit crunch budget

A new Sat Nav guide will alert people driving around France to its greatest historical sites as they tour the country. The low-cost software, which works on GPS equipment such as market leader Garmin, responds to satellite prompts as cars approach places of historical interest throughout France, delivering fascinating information narrated by a friendly voice through the Sat Nav. It means motorists will no longer remain oblivious to the cultural treasures around them as they cruise along the roads of France.

The software package, costing £19.95 for a download, features a total of 620 sites in France. Each location has been carefully researched and created, over 3 years, providing the listener with an engaging 2 minutes of commentary as they approach or drive by.

Through the launch of this innovative product, French partner ZeVisit, which works with many of the tourism agencies and offices in France, saw an opportunity to reach the Sat Nav generation. “At ZeVisit, we strongly believe that audio is the only media that can make you feel strong emotions. What better than making every journey an emotional journey full of stories and imagination as well?” said Yann Le Fichant, CEO of ZeVisit.

RoadTour’s inventor, Daniel Taylor found that driving the roads of Europe could be a highly frustrating experience; “Sat Navs are great in getting us from A to B but hopeless at connecting us with the rich heritage of Europe” said Daniel. “There are times driving France’s clear motorways, when you might as well be driving through England for all you’re finding out. Our goal with our French partner, Zevisit, is to bring France’s fascinating history, beautiful environment and rich culture to the millions of people who sometimes just drive straight to Provence, barely stopping for fuel on the way”.

RoadTour works with Garmin Sat Nav equipment to trigger audio commentary and pictures of key attractions, including towns, villages, castles and battlefields. The system does not require the driver or passengers to touch any buttons since the audio just pops up, in a similar way to the traffic warnings on the radio. And for those more interested in directions than history...RoadTour even pauses for traffic directions!

Examples of commentaries include Rouen and Alsace;

“We’re in the middle of the 14th Century and it is half past eight in the morning in La place de Vieux Marché in Rouen. Joan of Arc is being brought to the centre of Rouen in a cart, her head shaved and escorted by 120 British soldiers. The Bishop of Beauvais, who supports England, reads the sentence for herecy, “We declare that you, Joan, corrupt member, must be rejected from the unity of the Church so that you won’t contaminate the other members. For this we reject you, we remove you and abandon you”. An immense crowd came to see the execution. Afterwards, when the executioner put out the fire, he got a huge surprise; Joan or Arc’s heart had remained intact! Because the English feared it would become a relic, they decided to throw her remains into the Seine and since then it is said that the Seine from Rouen to the sea is holy. When nearly 20 years later, the King of France, Charles the 7th, took back Normandy from the English, he ordered a cross to be erected in her memory on La Place de Vieux Marché.”

“Alsace became part of Germany in 1871, when a far reaching city planning project was set in motion. The German empire decided to move its political and administrative headquarters to the old city centre of Strasbourg, close to La Place de la Republique...this is truly several cities in one. It is a city that is Catholic, Protestant and Jewish all at once and the three architectural styles co-exist marvellously. According to local, Roger Siffert, Strasbourg is like a very beautiful woman wearing a superb tuxedo but with tennis shoes or boots on her feet...in Alsace, they would say ‘pretty like a punch in the eye’!”

RoadTour France costs a one-off £19.95 and can be downloaded from www.roadtour.co.uk.

Press release: 13.10.08 Key Forecasts Highlight Rapid Evolution of the Ultra-Mobile Device Market

NEW YORK - October 13, 2008 -
The fledgling market for ultra-mobile devices (UMDs) – a catch-all term that includes ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs), netbooks, and mobile Internet devices (MIDs) – is already complex, and will become more complicated as it grows. A few salient forecast numbers may serve to guide vendors and investors as they negotiate this tricky landscape.

According to ABI Research principal analyst Philip Solis, “Total revenues earned by vendors in the UMD market are expected to increase from $3.5 billion in 2008 to nearly $27 billion in 2013.”

This year, retail sales account for only 14% of shipments, while UMDs provided by mobile operators stand at nearly 30%; the balance are sold directly by manufacturers. Over five years, however, that distribution mix will change significantly. Operators currently subsidize UMDs for the sake of their potential services revenue, but they would prefer not to. By 2013, only 20% will be operator-provided, while retail sales are expected to account for 75%.

In 2013 more than half of all UMDs will have x86 processors at their heart (largely Intel’s Atom), with the balance based on ARM processors. When it comes to operating systems, in 2013 Linux will outnumber Windows devices by two to one across all UMDs, despite the higher return rate for Linux products (compared to Windows products) experienced by netbook vendors today.

Some MIDs will offer cellular voice services. “MIDs without cellular voice will be seen by users as ‘companion devices’,” says Solis. “They will be used in addition to mobile phones and not necessarily carried at all times. Cellular voice-enabled MIDs, in contrast, will be able to replace phones entirely; they will become the new high-end smartphones.”

ABI Research has painted a comprehensive quantitative picture of the UMD market in its “MIDs and Mobile CE Market Data”. http://www.abiresearch.com/products/market_data/MIDs_and_Mobile_CE_Market_Data

It provides forecasts for all UMDs including shipments, ASPs, and revenue, broken out by type, region, platform, and operating system as well as by features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ultra Wideband, and GPS. For MIDs, microsegmentation forecasts are provided, as are forecasts for the inclusion of cellular voice in MIDs.

It is a component of the firm’s MIDs and Mobile CE Research Service.

PostPosted: Wed Oct 15, 2008 10:06 am    Post subject: iPhone is an iTarget. Nokia’s First Shot is Just a Warning Reply with quote

Press release: 15.10.08 iPhone is an iTarget. Nokia’s First Shot is Just a Warning.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., October 15, 2008— When Apple launched the iPhone a little over a year ago, they disrupted the industry forever. Let’s give respect to a maverick and a trend setter. Apple proved that the end user, the ultimate decision maker, was ready for a change. However, they also woke up several sleeping giants that had been happy for years.
Apple did not copy the rest; they taught them a lesson. They made a sleek, sexy and cool phone that people wanted. Motorola did this earlier with the Razor, but they did not sustain the effort. Apple went beyond simply replacing the keyboard with a huge touch-screen display, they created a fun, yet effective user interface. It was different; . . . it was cool; . . it was sexy; . . . it was pure Apple. The Apple disciples came out in droves to get the first ones.

Smartphones to the Main Stream

This is what opened the eyes of the real handset manufacturers. Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and yes Motorola now know that there is a high margin business if you deliver the right product. The market for smartphones is growing and is the most lucrative handset market with the highest margins. There were approximately 125M smartphones sold in 2007.

One of the most interesting trends in handsets is that there is now a blurring of the lines between multimedia handsets and smart phones. “Smartphones” like the Samsung’s Instinct, Nokia’s N70 and Apple’s iPhone are all loaded with multimedia feature like high resolution image sensors, compelling displays, and superior music capabilities. A smartphone is commonly defined as being an open platform handset that allows access to the OS (Operating System) for application development. Apple is there. However, the target market for these handsets has been business professionals. Now with smartphones adding a full complement of multimedia capabilities, the market has now split into two classes, with a new consumer-oriented segment emerging.

Apple Created the First Consumer Friendly Smartphone, but Will Nokia Deliver it to the Masses?

Handset manufacturers have been taking conservative, methodical steps to incrementally enhance the phone. However, Apple’s iPhone changed the nature of competition. Yet, the major handset manufacturers were just sleeping… not dead.

Now they are responding, and bringing with them the years of experience and manufacturing prowess that matches the billion unit annual shipments. Now, the true powerhouse and number one market share holder, Nokia, has taken its first shot with the 5800 aka Tubes.
Nokia has the large touch-screen display. Their XpressMusic phone comes with music for the first year, challenging the iTunes á la cart model. In fact, the Tubes surpasses iPhone on a variety of usability features, including cut and paste, voice dialing, video dialing, MMS, instant messaging, an expansion MicroSD Memory Port , and a higher resolution 3.2 megapixel image auto focus sensor with dual LED flash.

The Future

Nokia’s phone is not even directly aimed at the iPhone market. It is being produced at a much lower price for midrange customers looking for an alternative to the iPhone. It is about half the cost of Apple’s phone. More importantly it does not locked into a particular service provider, featuring a SIM card in a covenant, easily accessed slot.

Nokia’s first pass is nice shot across Apples bow. It is certainly the first of many shots to come. The giant has awoken.

P.S. As praised by the one and only Mr. Stephen Fry in his famous ‘Dork Talk’ column, the Proporta Gadget Bag and Magnetic Cable Tidies are definitely not to be forgotten when off on your travels.

Press release: 22.10.08 Sat-Nanny Comes to Parent’s Rescue for half-term
· New software ends parent nightmares, by offering suitable child-friendly options, on their Sat Nav

· Launch timed for half-term when millions of Britons will be setting off for long journeys

· 3,000 child-friendly locations including Pubs, Restaurants, Activities and Attractions give families a real alternative to expensive, unfriendly, uninteresting & dirty service stations

Every parent comes to learn that ‘the best laid plans of mice and men go oft ‘astray’! At no time is this more the case than for long car journeys such as those frequently undertaken at half-term, which is almost upon us. Suddenly, on a trip, it becomes apparent that a break is needed and yet service-stations rarely do the trick.

www.childfriendly.co.uk and RoadTour have now come to the rescue in the form of a new system called Sat-Nanny, developed to work on standard Sat Navs. Sat Nanny empowers parents with information about the best places to take the family, when on the road, whatever the need.

“There is a world of difference between what one person means by child-friendly and another. We have spent 5 years researching all the very best places to take children. These are places that make parents and their children feel welcome.” Conrad Doyle, Founding Director of www.childfriendly.co.uk said, “Having made that information easy to access on our website, working with RoadTour has enabled us to bring all this to people on the move where it’s most valuable.”

Options for families too often come down to characterless and expensive motorway service stations. These are the places referred to by Which as "dingy and unattractive", even comparing one to "little more than a McDonald's next to a petrol station". The AA found 50% of service stations ‘Very Poor’ and none more than ‘Acceptable’ for Child Friendliness or Price. Food can be particularly expensive and variable according to Which, whose report referred to ‘chile con cardboard’ and concluded, "We found a wide variation in the quality of motorway service stations," according to Lorna Cowan of Holiday Which Magazine.

At a time when families are looking closely at every pound spent, research carried out recently (Sept ’08) by www.keepmoving.co.uk showed a snack-lunch costing £26.68 for a family of four at Reading Services. Yet just a few miles off the motorway lies the award-winning Swan Inn near Newbury. There, a family can enjoy freshly made sandwiches all round for under £20 or something more warming like Steak and Ale Pie, home-made beef-burger or fish and chips for little more. All this in a pleasant, relaxed (and clean) environment which makes both parents and children feel welcome.

Daniel Taylor, CEO of RoadTour, believes that by taking a little more time, families can have much more enjoyable journeys rather than rushing to get from A to B as quickly as possible. “We want to give families an opportunity to pull off the motorway and confidently choose somewhere with their Sat Nav. Somewhere the whole family can count on a welcoming atmosphere, whether they want to eat, see something a bit different or just have some fun together.”

Examples:
Child-Friendly locations, as they appear on Sat-Nanny, include The Crown & The Mohair Centre;
The Crown- Twickenham: This pub boasts a huge enclosed beer garden, with two fenced off play areas for children of different age groups, making it easy for adults to relax in the knowledge kids are happy and safe. There is plenty of space for families to eat inside as well, and car parking available. There is a children’s menu, but the food is limited to the stock options (pizza, fish fingers & macaroni cheese). Food for adults is typical gastro pub fare – nothing extraordinary, but well priced. There are baby-changing facilities.

The Mohair Centre- East Sussex: This is definitely a children's farm with angora goats all ready to be stroked by the kids and other farm animals such as pigs, cows and chickens. In Spring, you’ll be able to watch the lambing and kidding. No kidding! There are also spinning and weaving demonstrations and a nature trail to help the kids, yours not theirs, explore life on the farm.

To support the initiative, KWC is collaborating with Wind River, the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO). Wind River will provide a broad range of solutions and services that leverage Wind River's deep involvement in the Open Handset Alliance and expertise in commercial Linux. Press release: 22.10.08 AT&T Launches Smartphone of "Epix" Proportions

AT&T INTRODUCES SAMSUNG EPIXTM, THE FIRST SMARTPHONE WITH BUILT-IN OPTICAL MOUSE

New Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional Handset Boasts State-of-the-Art Features Including Wi-Fi, Built-in aGPS, Video Share and 2.0 Megapixel Camera

DALLAS, Oct. 21, 2008 - AT&T customers can now have a smartphone of "epix" proportions. AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) announced today the availability of the Samsung EpixTM, an innovative new smartphone featuring both an advanced touch screen and new optical mouse technology that is powered by AT&T's 3G network, the nation's fastest, and the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system.

The Epix, which is available exclusively to AT&T customers in the U.S., provides users with a choice of ways to navigate its touch screen, including the first-ever implementation of optical mouse technology on a phone sold in the U.S. Located in the center of the device between the right and left soft keys, the optical mouse allows for quick and easy navigation by simply sweeping a finger over it. To make a selection, a single click will bring users to their desired location within the phone's menus. The optical mouse can also be switched to a four-way navigation key for more traditional navigation. For those who would rather interact directly with the touch screen, they can either use their finger to navigate or the Epix's built-in stylus for pinpoint accuracy.

The Epix, which has a cool silver finish, follows a long line of robust and groundbreaking crossover smartphones from AT&T and Samsung Mobile. The Epix is a next-generation, sleek, stylish and compact handset. It brings users the ease of use of a personal computer with Windows Mobile 6.1 to a slim pocket-sized device that is perfect for today's on-the-go mobile consumer.

In addition, the Epix boasts an impressive feature set, which includes:

Wi-Fi® (802.11 b/g) - to connect with home or campus networks or access more than 17,000 AT&T hot spots nationwide, including at thousands of participating Starbucks locations.
Built-in aGPS - for use with AT&T Navigator, AT&T Navigator Global Edition and other GPS-based applications for personal and business use.
AT&T Video ShareSM - the first-ever service in the U.S. that allows users to share live video over wireless devices while participating in a voice call, so they can share family moments, monitor progress on a job site or review the day's work without having to leave the office.

2.0 Megapixel Camera - with video-capture capabilities.
Slim, Light Form Factor - Equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard, the Samsung Epix measures 4.6 inches x 2.4 inches x 0.5 inches, weighs just 4.4 ounces and includes a large 2.5-inch TFT color display.
The Epix also provides users with access to multiple e-mail accounts with Microsoft Direct Push for corporate users and AT&T Xpress Mail, which includes access to most major personal e-mail accounts. The Epix also offers over-the-air synchronization of contacts, calendars and task lists with Microsoft Exchange Server or Xpress Mail and support for Good Mobile Messaging.

"The Samsung Epix provides AT&T customers with the choice of the cutting-edge capabilities of a touch screen and optical mouse combined with the convenience of a QWERTY keyboard," said Michael Woodward, vice president, Business Mobility Products for AT&T's wireless unit. "AT&T and Samsung have had a very successful history of bringing innovative smartphones, such as BlackJackTM and BlackJack IITM, to market and the Epix is no exception. We're sure that the Epix will resonate equally well with AT&T customers."

"Samsung developed this phone with the business user in mind," said Bill Ogle, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung Telecommunications America. "Users want a device that they can take on the road with them. The Epix allows you to never miss a beat at the office, stay in touch with colleagues and family and enjoy entertainment."

Personal Computer in a Pocket-Sized Design

With Windows Mobile 6.1, the Epix brings a powerful personal computer experience to a compact device. Additional Windows Mobile 6.1 features on the Epix include threaded SMS messaging, Internet connection sharing, mobile banking and Voice Command.

The Samsung Epix also supports Microsoft's System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008, an enterprise-grade mobile solution for managing and protecting Windows Mobile 6.1 phones. Mobile Device Manager provides users with software distribution capabilities and security-enhanced access to company data while they are away from the office.

"People increasingly need powerful phones to be able to stay in touch with their work and personal lives," said Todd Peters, vice president of marketing, Mobile Communications Business, Microsoft. "The Epix continues Samsung's tradition of sleek, versatile devices that appeal to our shared customer and adds to the already expansive portfolio of Windows Mobile phones on AT&T."

Press release: 22.10.08 International Mobile Business Subscribers Want Similar Device Features but Different Services, According to Survey

NEW YORK - October 22, 2008 -
In a survey conducted by ABI Research among mobile business customers from seven industrialized countries, the mobile device features currently attracting most interest and used most often are similar, regardless of location. Bluetooth, speakerphone and voice activated dialing are the most adopted features; QWERTY keyboards, touchscreens, PIM/PDA functionality and large screen size are of most interest regardless of country. However the most used mobile services differ between countries, which suggests varied opportunities and challenges for operators to leverage interests in new device options.

According to principal analyst Dan Shey, “South Korea and Taiwan are frequent video services users, so devices with larger screens can leverage device screen real estate for other multimedia content and services. UK respondents text message significantly more than other nations’ mobile business customers and a high percentage of their usage is for personal reasons; UK operators will want to use improved keypad options for more interactivity, perhaps through advertising or with major brands.”

Device feature interests can also help businesses improve their productivity. Adds Shey, “Use of handsets to access corporate data is still low, averaging about 12% of the survey respondent base. Greater device capabilities can lower the barriers for businesses to leverage corporate data for the benefit of their mobile employees.“

A new ABI Research Brief, “International Mobile Business Customer Mobile Services Profiles” provides a view of mobile services and device adoption and usage for business customers from seven countries: the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. Data include demographics by business customer vertical, occupation, size of business and mobility profile. The Brief is based on a web-based survey of 1,402 mobile business users.

Mobile services adoption and uptake data are provided across platforms that provide mobile voice, messaging, internet and corporate applications. Other highlighted points are mobile services voice and data spend, corporate bill payment, and laptop usage for Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

The study forms part of two of the firm's Research Services, Cellular PC Modems and Business Mobility which include Research Reports, Research Briefs, Market Data, Online Databases, ABI Insights, the ABI Vendor Matrix, and analyst inquiry support.

ABI Research is a leading market research firm focused on the impact of emerging technologies on global consumer and business markets. Utilizing a unique blend of market intelligence, primary research, and expert assessment from its worldwide team of industry analysts, ABI Research assists hundreds of clients each year with their strategic growth initiatives.
