My Go 720's battery went flat again when switched off and it has now lost all it's data. I managed to connect it to TT Home and reload the Apps but it wont let me have any maps unless I pay for them. This cannot be right as the unit is only 10 months old. What can I do to get my maps back? |

Yes done both of them. It will not even let me restore from my previous backup! I seem to be able to get everything working except the map. |

If you have really done a full windows explorer back-up there shouldn't be any problem to copy the map back to your device from your PC. Are you sure you haven't used TomTom Home for you backup? |

As the battery has no bearing on data (it;'s stored in flash memory or on the SD card and is power independent) I'm confused as to what has happened here.
What 'apps' are you referring to and how have you lost everything? _________________ Darren Griffin |

It is within its guarantee period - why not contact TT "support" and insist they sort out. If you get no luck with them take it back to where you bought it and demand they sort it out (assuming that is you are in the UK) _________________ Peter

Hi keefy2
You are in a pickle. However, if you made a proper Windows Backup it should work. Did you follow the instructions as described in the Sticky Tomtom Faq’s/How to backup my device? I know that the answer to that doesn’t help you in your present difficulty but when you are finally up and running again a proper Windows Backup is the first priority.
Believe me, it works and is designed to get you out of the trouble that you now find yourself in.
Good Luck. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

I think we need to find out exactly what has happened first, a flat battery does not cause loss of data. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi Darren
You are right of course.
However, just out of curiosity what would happen If one was to disconnect the battery. On reconnection what would one have lost?
Out of curiosity I have often been tempted to find out for myself, but being British I rather leave that assignment to you folk. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

You'd lose nothing at all, data is stored in flash memory and does not require power to store or retain. Removing the power would have no effect at all. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi Darren
By data I take it that you mean everything would still be there in the device except the actual contents of the Map Folder. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

No, by 'data' I mean everything stored on the device, program, voices, POIs, maps et al. All is stored in flash memory internally (or on a memory card in some devices) and all is impervious to power loss except where that power loss occurs as a particular file was being written to or read from. In that case the file in question might become corrupted but no more. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I have an old original TomTom Go, which has been lying about in a drawer for the last eight months. I got it out last week, only to find that the battery was completely flat.
I put it on charge overnight and switched it on in the morning. There was no change of anything, even the last position that I drove to was showing on the display. _________________ TT Go 720 (T)

Got a strange feeling of "deja vu" when I read this....
Felt sure I'd already done an answer once today.
Are you "OldWomble" HERE by any chance?
If it's not you, I'll say the same thing, can you do a screen grab or preferably a file listing of the contents of your TomTom storage memory, please?
(you can use a utility called DriveZ) |
