Ok, I seem to have got myself in a fix.
I decided to take advantage of the latest map/quarterly updates for Western and Central Europe.
I paid by Visa and downloaded. My download speed is very slow but the goods slowly came down the wires. After 9 hours I reckoned I had another hour remaining but was surprised five minutes later to see that the download was complete and the install button was greyed out.
Using Windows Explorer I viewed my device and was not surprised to see that nothing at all had been added or installed. However, in my old map folder everything had been deleted except the Pocket GPS World cameras. I then went to ‘Home’ Downloads and did find a new folder with the following contents.
activation_map_50355.cab (ZIP file)
map9506-1.gif
map9506.gif
Western_and_Central_Europe_2gb.toc
Western_and_Central_Europe_2gb.zip (Zip File)
Hoping that I may be able to install by using these files I tried but failed, and so I restored my last Backup. Home insists that I now have the new map and so I cannot download. Again. Advice would be appreciated. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

You could try following the instructions in this thread

Hi GPS_fan
Thanks for replying. I am on the road until this evening but as soon as I return I will be following the advice as described on the thread. I will let you know how things go.
However, one things for sure, and that’s the importance of Backups. If I was one of those who have no Backup to use I would be well and truly flummoxed. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

True!!
I'm possibly excessive with backups - before and after changing anything with a few in between for good measure.
The instructions given helped me download a map which was otherwise elusive. It should be fairly straightforward, but give me a shout if you have any problems. _________________ Andy

Try this:
http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?FID=9869&Lid=1
does this page help, it basically tells you to delete the map folder, and you "will" then be reoffered the download after clicking "Update my device" in HOME.
I also found that if everything is deleted from my Tomtom through Explorer and then started in the cradle all the Software you need is reinstalled anyway, so as you don't have much left that you can't reinstall, you could give that a whirl. It worked for my 920 anyway. Then the map should become available.
Cheers

Carl, yes you need to delete the map folder on your device and empty the downloads folder on your PC (after copying it, of course).
The instructions I refer to above give a fuller step by step guide to the process and having been through the process, I know it works. _________________ Andy

Hi Trevor1234 it seems that you may still be using a dial up connection for your Internet access or could it be a very very slow broadband?
I too was in this situation until recently having convinced myself that I did not need the speed available from broadband but since changing it seems to give more advantages than I could have imagined and lets me keep everything updated on my PC without hassle.
It also means I can get into trouble much quicker than I used to. |

Hi Folks
I have followed your device and have started downloading once again. We will see what happens this time round. As I have explained before it takes a long time to download with my connection and I doubt if I will finish my download before 0200 tomorrow. And, that’s if it doesn’t throw in the towel before it finishes its job. Gawd! I hope it works.
By the way, EricWB I do have Broadband but I am at the end of the line. I have tried different Providers but to no avail. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

Ok Folks
Its 11:00 pm and its still downloading slowly. I estimate that it still has about four hours still to run which means that it will be around 03:00am when the download is complete.
I cant make up my mind whether to sit up or go to bed. If it stops before the download is complete, I will, er! ring the Samaritans. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

Glad to hear it's downloading again!
After the download is complete, the map has to be installed onto your device.
If I were you, I'd go to bed and either leave it until morning or set an alarm for 4am or some time after you're expecting the download to complete.
...having said that, most of us have probably been known to stay up late from time tom time _________________ Andy

Hi there
Just out of curiosity on my previous map (720) I had my traffic camera warnings with voice commands all set to perfection. Does anyone know if I can retrieve the settings from my previous Backup of the v720 and place them into my new map. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

Take the "MapSettings.cfg" file from the old map and copy it to the new one along with the associated POI files (ogg, bmp and ov2 file types) - this should then transfer all the settings to the new map - Mike |
