|
|
I have a NUVI 200 a friend gave me in Feb 07. After playing with the voices, I was able to put my own on there using Ash's Voice Utility. I used the American_English voice file, which had 116 (I think) commands. Does anyone know if that list is still valid for the new versions of the Garmin? In other words, are there still 116 commands for the American English voice with the same #s corresponding to the same commands? I am looking to buy a new unit and would like to put the voice file I made onto the new one.
Thanks!

In the absence of any other replies, I would suggest that you could get an idea by downloading a voice from the Garmin site and seeing what Ash's utility shows you.
You will find them under Support/Updates&Downloads/Streetpilot 340 (amongst others). As far as I am aware the voice files are the same across the unit ranges. You will presumably want to select a NON-TTS voice in the list. _________________ David

David,
I downloaded the voice, but it comes in a self-extracting ".exe" file that fails on my computer because it doesn't recognize that my unit is attached! Grrr. All I need is the version 2 American English "VPM" file and I could go from there.
Any idea how I could "extract" it from the "exe" file?
Thanks again!

It took me a while to find the reference I used a couple of years ago, but what I had in mind is contained in steps 1 - 4 of the following link:

This link was for TTS files but IF the file structure is the same for non-TTS (the first 60 characters in the file I believe were for the Garmin extractor to load the voice file) then it MAY display in a meaningful form in ASH's Voice Utility after you rename it as a .vpm file.
If not and you don't get any more helpful hints, then you may just have to be prepared to redo your edits on the new unit file, if you can't reload your old (modified) voice. It's quite likely, I would have thought, that the current file IS the same as on your earlier unit.
Sorry if I haven't been too helpful - I had hoped someone with a bit more of a clue might have stepped up to the plate first! Good luck, anyway _________________ David

David,
Actually it was a tremendous help! I downloaded "Version 2.00" of the American Voice dated June of 05. And that was on the "Street Pilot 2730," which seemed to be the newest unit for which there were voice files available (date was Jan 08).
One interesting thing was that it has 131 wav files when split with the utility, and there are several differences in the command numbers. For example, I was getting 116 commands with the American English VPM originally with Ash's utility. There are some added commands (like "kilometers per hour," "slightly," etc.) that push the original commands into different command numbers.
Do you know what version the 116-command American VPM is? I can't tell if Version 2.00 (131 files) is newer or older.
Version 2.00 did work on my nuvi 200.
Thanks again!
Ryan. |

Hi Ryan,
Glad it WAS a help ! I don't know about different versions, but here is a link to a site which has previous versions of Garmin software releases. It MAY have voices as well (I was too impatient to wait for the download to complete

It may help to answer your query.
