|
|
I've tried everything to erase the custom POIs on my Nüvi 760, to no avail:
1* removed the external memory card
2* deleted file poi.poi from the \Garmin directory
3* used poiloader to erase all custom POIs
4* did a soft reset (hold bottom-right during bootup) to erase all user data.
But even after all this I still see these @#$% custom POIs !
Any further ideas besides sending the unit back?
regards, Gijs. _________________ Garmin 760T FM |

I no longer have a Garmin to try this on but as, I believe, POILoader overwrites existing custom POIs, is it possible to "point" it at an empty location to upload from?
If not, you could at least reduce the custom POIs to one category containing one location, or possibly no locations. _________________ Anita

the latest version of poi loader has an option to remove any currently installed POIs or to install new ones. have you tried the remove option?

POI can be in the Garmin/POI directory:
1- On the unit itself
2- On the SD card.
Did you erase both?
POI can also be int he Garmin/GPX directory:
1- On the unit itself
2- On the SD card.
Check both. There could be a "file".gpx there containing the POIs you want to get rid of. Obviously, you will find your Favorites in Current.gpx. _________________ Latest RGN_Tool, GIR_Editor, Extra_POI_Editor and other Garmin tools: Click HERE |

thanx for the responses all.
But I had already removed the SD card, as well as removed all .gpx files.
Next I used POIloader (as described above) to remove all custom POIs.
Yet they are still in my device !
Anita: Poiloader refuses to proceed if it doesn't see any .gpx or .csv files in the indicated directory....
I'm out of ideas, but maybe you have a further suggestion?

if you connect your nuvi to the pc and then do windows search. select only that drive (the nuvi) and search for all files and in search criteria put *.gpi
this should show you where the file is.

I am getting to grips with my Garmin addition to my GPS collection having been a TomTom man so far.
If I use the 'install new ones' option does it leave the existing ones and add the new ones. I understood that the Garmin POI loading over writes the whole of the POI.
If it does overwrite, it means I need a copy of the existing POI on my computer to which I add the Camera POI from this site. How do I extract the existing from the 2720?

It overwrites.

That's correct

Correct

You'd have to extract the POis from the .gpi file on the device. Can't you get the POIs from the original source? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks for the very quick response.
The original ones were on the unit when I received it. ( Bought second hand via this site) so extracting then from the unit seems the only option.
Since asking the question I have posted another question re connecting my 2720 to my PC.
My pc does not see my Garmin as a separate device although I have loaded the latest driver from Garmin onto my pc and when I did this the computer confirmed driver loaded and hardware working correctly.
Garmin POI Loader sees it.
Rather than double post is it best if I get back to you if I don't get an answer to my original

Points of Interest are Garages inc BMW & Toyota dealers ( my cars) , Hotels, Eating Places,Banks plus others I do not need. I do not know if they are from Garmin or other 3rd party.
They do not include the Pocket GPS Speed Camera data which the previous owner rightly deleted.
I have downloaded the consolidated speed cameras for Garmin and it is these I want to add at the same time keeping those of the existing that I want.

Is the following correct?
I found the PGPS review on the Garmin 2820 by Tim and Mike in Dec 2006 which states that POI under the Food, Hotel ... category are by Garmin and are in the software of the GPS and are only changed with a map update.
If I enter my own POI including PGPS Camera database they go into the 'Extras' and it is these that are deleted and replaced every time I use POI Loader.
So if I keep a complete file of my own POI and make changes to this file I can manage POI on the unit

There are built-in POIs such as Railway Stations, Petrol, Parking and many more and there are custom POIs uploaded by the user.
Have you checked our FREE POI Download area? If these POIs are custom POIs then they are very likely to have been downloaded from here in the first place! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yes the built in POIs are only updated when the maps are updated. They can't be removed or edited. However seeing as the latest maps still show a local cinema 10 years after it was pulled down i don't use them.

This is how POILoader works. You need to keep all your POIs in a folder on your PC, including the Speed Camera Database. Each time you need to change any thing put the relevant files in that folder and upload the lot with POILoader. You can't make individual changes to the unit and you must reload the lot each time.
Quote: | So if I keep a complete file of my own POI and make changes to this file I can manage POI on the unit |
As above. Keep the POI files on your PC and if you make any changes to that folder re-upload the lot.
The PGPSW POIs are more up to date as changes can be submitted to PGPSW and these are then added to the POI files. You'll need to re-download the updated POI files and replace the old files with the new ones in your collection and then upload them all again to get them on the Sat Nav. |
