New JVC KW-NX7000 Headunit - questions!

Just had one of these beauties installed and trying to get the speed cam database uploaded to it.

The unit has only just been released onto the market and as such there is very little info about it online.

What I do know is that ...

* it uses TeleAtlas maps, Western Europe (I think)
* has very similar functionality to the TomTom Go720
* can only be updated by SD card
* did not come with an SD card
* cannot be connected to a PC for USB updates
* only has room for 100 custom POI's, which have to be manually entered

So, unless someone already knows if/how to update one of these, it's time for some experimenting!

First question : on a TomTom, is it possible to extend the POI categories (to include the speed cams), by only using an SD card? I've never owned a TT so sorry if this is an obvious one!

Next question : how do you prepare the SD card?

In case that's a non-starter, what is the exact folder location on a Go720 for the OV2 files? I've already tried putting them in the root directory of the card and despite a "processing" message they did not get loaded.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

From looking at the pictures of the display it looks nothing like TomTom at all, is there a manual with the device and does it mention anything about custom POI files? - Mike

The manual Click Here - 28 Mb PDF doesn't mention TomTom or Custom POIs as far as i can see.....

In fact the word TomTom never appears in the manual even under the specs....

The evidence of a link to TomTom is only circumstantial... the Nav interface does look different, but this could just be a skin. The core Nav functionality looks to be a close match.

As this is TeleAtlas (a company soon to be bought by TomTom), I think that the way that the mapping and POI data is stored in the JVC is the same as in any other OV2 device - of which the TomTom is the only one I know of that can use SD cards for updating the maps.

If that assumption is correct then there may already be a "known" way of updating the unit via an SD card. Simply putting the new OV2 data on the card apparently is not enough.

Just because it uses TeleAtlas doesn't mean it is TomTom, it could be running Sygic, McGuider or another application that uses map data supplied by TeleAtlas, are there any Help screens that show you anything like product names etc other than TA - Mike

A little update for those who are interested!

I managed to find some FW for the NX5000, which is based on the same Windows Automotive (WinCE 5) platform as the NX7000. The FW is full of references to JVC, and I cannot find any to any other brand (iGo, TomTom, etc).

Looking through the FW with my trusty hex editor, I found lots of references to "speedCamera" and also a pointer to the the following file :

\db0\Database\Europe\INIT.ZDB

(The US version replaces Europe with NorthAmerica).

2 questions ...

1. What is a .ZDB file?
2. Does anyone have any experience in accessing the filesystem directly in a Windows Automotive/WinCE system?

Sorry to resurrect a dead topic, but did anything ever come of this?

I only ask as I'm currently looking to upgrade from my ageing TomTom to a sat nav (for which I use the pocketgpsworld speed camera database, and I was also curious as to whether there was any means to upload the speed camera poi categories to the navigation.

As far as we have been able to tell, this unit does not support custom POIs of any sort.

That's great (well, it's not for the folks with the unit already, but it's helped me out no end). Thanks for your input, Darren. Looks like I'll have to go for an alternate system using a more poi friendly software. Smile

Kenwood would be the place to start, Garmin software and fully POI compatible.
