the roads would be safer (at the same cost) if they employed 10 people at £25k specifically for driving around actually manning the roads and still have £150k left for fuel etc!

I posted this originally this morning. Ten minutes later a letter dropped on my door mat with a fixed penalty notice for speeding on the M4 outside Swindon of all places.
Karma?
Far cop, I'll come quietly, but what hacked me off was that I speed up to get out of the way of an unmarked police car with the lights on... I did speak to the very nice people at Wiltshire Police, who did advise me that I should have slowed down to get in a gap! _________________ iPhone5, TomTom, Google maps, Navfree, Viewranger and Apple Maps (ekk) |

Ain't it queer that when speed cameras stop making a profit, the councils suddenly lose interest in operating these fantastic road safety devices. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Location was, according to the very good (secure) website.
M4 (W/BOUND)
BET JCT 16 & 17 AT MP 141/5 (SITE MA6)
Other interesting facts about this location are:
Site length in kilometres (approximate) 2.0
BASELINE FIGURES (supplied to DFT prior to site approval)
Collisions involving fatalities or serious injury 4
Collisions involving any injury 14
Speed at which 85% of motorists were travelling at or below (mph) 81
Motorists exceeding the speed limit (percentage) 52
This is an image of the type of enforcement vehicle that will be used for speed enforcement on the M4 motorway in Wiltshire.
For Health & Safety reasons we are unable to provide actual site photographs of the speed enforcement vehicle. Enforcement at this site is carried out from a vehicle stationed on a nearby motorway overbridge, as per attached example.
More details can be found at http://www.safetycameraswiltshire.co.uk/sites.asp and type in MA6.
I hope this helps? _________________ iPhone5, TomTom, Google maps, Navfree, Viewranger and Apple Maps (ekk) |

Yes, that's the pair of mobiles in our database numbers 7033 (westbound) and 14111 (eastbound) - I think MaFt will confirm that I regularly report them as active/seen again, indeed I did so only day before yesterday, Monday - seen operating 10:15am Sunday 13th July 2008.
Didn't you have them on your satnav? _________________ Dennis

Yes - they are there, but I use my mobile phone for Sat Nav and was using it (hands free) so no alert!
The interesting thing is that I was clocked over 450m away. That is some distance! _________________ iPhone5, TomTom, Google maps, Navfree, Viewranger and Apple Maps (ekk) |

That's why a lot of us use the "ten times the speed in yards" rule for fixed cameras but at least DOUBLE that for mobile sites.
So at 70MPH, Gatsos, Specs etc. warn me at 700 yards but I have Mobiles set to warn at 1400 yards!
This is also why most readar warning systems are useless for mobiles, by the time it picks up a signal, you've already been 'done'! |

This is an absolute classic!
The use of "Health and Safety" for excuses is very poor, especially when you use the link, that Simon has proved, and look at "MA6" where you will see that on the official web sites somebody has taken a photo of the vehicle whilst standing in the central reservation, which I think is far more dangerous than even doing so from the hard shoulder with a vehicle parked to protect you from approaching vehicles!

And just in case anybody cares, the actual picture in question is of Mobile:14114, looking Eastbound, nearly at M4 Junction 15. Strangely, I haven't seen that one in operation for several months now. _________________ Dennis
