Hey guys - just saw a video of the 255 on youtube with it's new refresh rate - and wow did it look very smooth and nice.
Unfortunately the TTS on it is either terrible (if you get us unit) or non-existant (uk) and I would really quite like to have TTS. Not so much to be told what road I'm going on, but because I believe satnav is making people lazy in remembering the roads they are on and how to get from a to b. There is little locational awareness when using gps.
I know the 760 doesn't have the good refresh rate or smooth map redraws. And unfortunately neither does the navigon 8110 really (if you turn it seems to pause then totally re-render everything quite jumpily).
Does the nuvi 860 have quick 4hz map redraws????
Also, I noticed that the 800 series now have custom avoids for roads and areas - something crucial for getting around London (e.g. avoiding picadilly for instance), does it let you avoid certain roads in the route list like a tomtom or navigon?
i.e. it lists the roads of the route and has a button that you can select to avoid and then recalculate. |

If some desidiosusness struck people from the above:
Does the 8** series have the quick redraw rate of the nuvi 255???
Does the custom avoidance for roads and areas work not only before a route is planned, but whilst you view and edit a route? i.e. in the turn list can you avoid one of the options and have it recalculate just as with a navigon, or tomtom, or medion or almost any other satnav system.

Hello
I don't think that there is very many people that can answer as logistics of an 860 AFAIK this has not been released in the UK yet.
I am waiting for an 860 which is how I know. The 880 which is for sale in the US is shipping.
Perhaps you could send an Email to Garmin who might be able to answer your question.
Ps may I suggest that you edit your second post.
People don't take kindly to being told "lazy"
This is not a way that will help to receive replies or assistance from members of the PGPSW community who will be more than willing to help.

I already did. They just came up with some marketing speak that didn't answer my query directly. They simply restated that the 800 used their most recent software and that avoidances were removed from route calculations - not answering either of my questions.
I posted the above after over 100posts but no response and assumed i was initially too verbose. No need for anyone to take anything personal from it. |

I Have a Nuvi 860T they were released a couple of weeks ago. I cannot yet answer the route avoidance but screen refresh is similar to our previous TT910 I cannot tell you if it is 4hz but with all the detail on it seems quite smooth. Overall a very good bit of Kit. Speak recognition work remarkably well although I did invest in the external mike. There are a couple of anoyances but the firmware seems more mature than the Tomtoms and we exist on the Navteq maps unlike the Teleatlas maps of the past 4 years!
I will investigate the avoidance feature and report back, anything else you want to know please let me know
regards

thanks awdxs1 - I look forward to more info on the avoidances feature.
It seems a bit crazy that garmins with the nuvi range cut out the ability from the older units to review a route and then avoid certain parts of it in the planning stage - I guess you could do it in mapsource but as I like to use gps units more for cartography than for route guidance it is a pity for me. |
