So how do I get HD Traffic on my 720 now that I have Navcore 8?
Although not doing many miles, with two sprogs under two years of age - avoiding traffic jams (and the cost of fuel) is worth a fair few pennies! |

Guessing from your e-mail address you are in the UK so you will have to wait for the service to become available, currently it is only used in Holland, the UK should get HD Traffic later this year and I am sure you will see plenty of information in the forum when it goes live in the UK - Mike |

Yes I'm in the UK.
That's a bummer Mike - I wanted it for our August holidays!
I guess patience is a virtue! |

RDS-TMC or subscription based Traffic via the mobile phones GPRS connection is all you can use in the UK at this point in time - Mike |

Thank you for the suggestions.
TMC seems a bit pants by all accounts
My work supplied phone costs £1 per MB (yes, per MB) and my personal Orange PAYG, well I have no idea what the cost is there. Any clues on how many MB's would be used up using GPRS?
Many thanks. |

I used to use about 100KB per hour when using the device set to update every 15 minutes, this is just an average figure taken from a few trips when I measured what it was doing.
RDS-TMC is actually better now than previously, there are still reception issues but I have to say of late the unit seems to pick out a weak signal (I live in a poor reception area) with ease.
Once you overcome the issue of getting the information (and this applys to either transmission method) there is next the issue of data quality, both methods to get the data use the same source often it is wrong so I don't use it alone to decide a route or re-plan, when it works it works very well - Mike |

And if you are travelling abroad, RDS-TMC reception is pretty good. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Is my unit faulty, as I also got weak reception going from Calais to Paris and Eurodisney with my TT710 and TMC aerial. |

Difficult to quantify. Many European countries (France inc) have free public access TMC service along major routes AND paid for services like ours which have both wider coverage and allegedly better information. _________________ Darren Griffin |

One option would be to pick up a very cheap T-Mobile bluetooth phone and use a pay as you go SIM just for traffic. Depending on your needs the cost for GPRS is then either £1 per day or you can purchase 5 days usage for £2.50.
I'm still struggling to understand why HD traffic will not be available to customers using the GPRS Traffic service. The HD service is just a power adaptor with mobile phone built in, and TomTom are combining both types of data on their servers that will feed the HD service, so why not deliver this using GPRS as well?
Just found this phone £25 Nokia with Bluetooth:

After some deliberation .... RDS-TMC may be the answer if HD Traffic doesn't come out before August.
Does RDS-TMC work on minor roads that have a fair amount of traffic, or is it just motorways/dual carriageways.
Actually - does anyone know how RDS-TMC folks get their traffic data? |

This has been discussed at some length in the TMC forums here, a good place to start is iTIS's own website which explains much of the process:
