Hi Folks
When I owned my PDA and Tomtom Five I purchased a screen protector from Writeshield and very satisfactory it was too. So when I got my Tomtom Go 720 I purchased another protector but from a different company. This protector is not very good at all and I want to remove it. “Easy” you may say. Wrong. I have spent hours using all kind of methods in attempting to take it off but to no avail. The main difficulty is the fact that it fits the screen perfectly and I can not get under it from the screen edge to lift it. I have tried lifting it with Selotape but that fails too.
Now, I know that I could manage the task (this sounds rather drastic) if I could remove the front of the device. I could then get under the protector from the edge. I can see two screws on the back of the device but do not intend proceeding any farther without some advice. . Has any one out there dismantled the 720? _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

This may sound daft, but if you have the windscreen sticker mount for your device, try using the sucker end on the screen protector. It may be just that bit stronger than sellotape and might lift an edge just enough to get a blade underneath.
Good luck! _________________ Ric - TomTom 520 DEAD - Passed to the great traffic jam in the sky. Now using Maps & Waze on Samsung Galaxy S4 + CamerAlert of course! |

Hi richard345
Ah! That’s a shame, the sucker diameter is larger than the screen. But thanks, the idea was sound. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

That's a shame. How about one of the suckers off a kid's bow & arrow set or anything like that. I remember in to old days of dial telephones, BT engineers used a sucker to remove the centre plastic disc of the phone to put the number label in. Now that was a strong sucker!
Could you push a pin or needle in at an oblique angle, towards a corner of the coverand see if that will lift it? _________________ Ric - TomTom 520 DEAD - Passed to the great traffic jam in the sky. Now using Maps & Waze on Samsung Galaxy S4 + CamerAlert of course! |

Hi richard345
Yes, I had thought of a needle but obviously I am a bit reluctant to use steel on the screen untill all else has failed.
However, If you read in your local paper later this week that small boys have been mugged and their bows and arrows stolen please say nothing to the constabulary. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

Prising the corner up with a wooden cocktail stick may be less drastic than using a needle? _________________ Anita

Hi Anita
At the moment I am using a pointed plastic type needle that can cause no damage. But, if you look at a 720 you will see that there is a ridge round the outside of the screen and as the protector fits the screen perfectly I am unable to get under the edge. Believe me, I’m not often beaten, but this…..
Gawd! I sure wish I had never fitted the b----y thing.. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

How about warming it up with a hairdryer then try the cocktail stick it may make the protector go soft |

Hi CHEDS
Tried it, unfortunately it didn’t work. I have a feeling that I am stuck with this. Damn. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

Are you sure it hasn't fell off whilst you wasn't looking?
Seriously though how about duct tape? nice and wide, very sticky, pushed well into the 4 corners and edges, might well find a loose bit. |

Hurray! I have just done it.
Whenever I have had a few spare minutes over the last few weeks I have tried to remove the protector from my device. I have tried sticky tape, duct tape and extra sticky tape from the builders merchant but to no avail. But today I had made my mind up to do it no matter what. And the solution? Well, richard345 suggested using a needle and as all else had failed I decided to try it.
Luckily I had two other spare screen protectors in my desk and I fixed one of these to a piece of glass. I then got a needle and practised on each corner of the protector in turn until I had the hang of it. Then like an Eye Surgeon I operated on the real thing, and Bingo, I managed it first time and without leaving a mark on the screen.
I know that a needle sounds a bit drastic and perhaps I was lucky to manage it without mishap. But, the job is done and thanks for the suggestions. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

Hi richard345
Don’t be off of Screen protectors completely, because some are better than others. I had Writeshield for both my PDAs and they were brilliant.
However, when I purchased my Go 720 I'm afraid Writeshield didn’t make protectors for the Go although they do now. So, I got the protectors from some other manufacturer off the net. If the corners had been rounded on the new ones like they were on my original ones I could have easily got under the edge and removal would have been easy. But unfortunately the corners were square and the protector fitted the screen exactly making access impossible.
Anyway, all is now well and thanks. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.
