I have just ordered a Nuvi 760 from Amazon for £204.99. Do I need an SD card for it, and if so, what is the best one to buy?

Thanks.

I got a scandisk 4GB SD card from Amazon for about £8 for my 770.

It has approx 3.5GB of music and audio books on it for my motorhome trips.

leaving space for routes & waypoints and custom POI's Very Happy

You don't need one but it is very handy to have & I use mine for storing loads of mp3's & all my speed camera data from here.

Well worth getting one & although I have some top end cards the cheap ones have always worked as well.

Does anyone know if the Garmin units - especially the 7xx and 8xx units are able to support the SD High Capacity disks which go up to 32GB?

Many thanks

Hi Miles

I have found out that the maximum SD card size is 4gb for the 700 series and the new 800 as well when it comes out. (the 800 series will be using the micro SD card)

I made enquiries into that as well as I was going to get an 8gb, I'm glad that I didn't as that would have been a useless buy.

Did you actually try with an 8GB card? I have read too in the 7xx manual that 4GB is the max, but I'm sure I heard on here that someone used a class6 8GB SD card in the 760.

If you can find a cheap 8GB for £20 or so you should try it anyway.

On a more technical note, if the device takes 4GB, then that is possibly a class4 card. There are class4 8GB cards too, not just class6. That would rule out hardware issues.

However, the only reason why it might not work is if the device itself can onl address 4GB for whatever software limitation was put in place.

Hi Chris

To tell you the truth I didn't go for an 8gb SD card, I had a look at the Garmin frequently asked questions about the limits for the SD card.

At the moment I have the equivalent of 22 cd's converted to mp3's on my card. I am going to get another 4gb card so I will put different titles on when I've listened to all the orther one. Btw can you remember as to where you saw abou the 8g card as I missed that one.

Thanks

Rudd

Without actually testing it, I suspect it's the same issue as the TomTomGuys have. It will only write to 4g, but can read from 8, or 16, etc.

when would the device need to be able to write to the card? If you use the nuvi as the card reader itself rather than a dedicated usb reader?

Do I need to download (all or some) POIs from site here to SD card or will they fit on my Nuvi 760?

If I have the choice, which is the better option?

Sorry if questions have been answered before, I am new to the wonders of sat nav. Embarassed

Hi and Welcome.

I have 33,000 POIs and they fit into a 2.2 Mb file so they'll fit on either the Internal Memory or an SD Card.
