to buy or not to buy

Hey all....I am wondering wither to take the plunge and advance into the ever growing 'new craze' that is GPS for your car. I am thinking of purchasing the 'Sony NV-U53G Navigation Unit' but does anyone know what else I need to buy along with this equipment and furthermore how do I download extra maps for other countries such as the USA??? I appreciate all the help I can get in regards to my purchase!

Hi collie,

I am new here as well, but I read that Sony was pulling out of the SatNav business in UK and Europe.
Therefore I don't suppose there will be much support for the system.
I believe they are still going to sell them in USA and Asia.

My personal recommendation would be to go for a Tomtom or a Garmin .!!!
I think its important that you go to the shops and try them in the store or if you have a friend whom you could borrow one from to try out .
I believe the Sony has a slow processing unit which is really a big handicap for a sat nav .

You can pick up a Tomtom 520 or 720 for silly money at the moment as there is a new model coming out shortly

As has been said, if your EU bases, forget Sony as they're abandoning the market.

Personally I would suggest you at least try and get demo's of Garmin and TomTom. Both are excellent and both very different in their implementations. I too favour TomTom but many others swear by Garmin.
