|
|
We've just got a 60CSX which seems to be great. Does everything I need and more. I've loaded the Trip & Waypoint manager software which came with the device onto the PC but of course it doesn't have any maps on it. I've got the Garmin City Navigator pre-installed on a memory card. I really need some form of map for the PC so that I can (hopefully) edit the tracks I've walked and preferably get the Trip Computer information as well. A friend recommended either Fugawi UK Digital Maps 1:50,000 or memory map and just getting the North of England which is all I'll need. Does anyone know which of these are better or can recommend something else.
Thanks |

If you can make the Outdoors show at the NEC (14 to 16th March) you will be able to try out these products and ask questions whilst using them on the stands, they might even have discounts for purchases (but don't hold me to that) - you might find you prefer one mapping package more than other, so a try before buy is always a better bet - Mike |

Sadly I won't be here for that. Is there anywhere else I could see the software working? |

Visit eBay and buy MetroGuide [£12] for the PC for roads etc.
It will be far more expensive for other software! |

Thanks for the idea. I walk a lot over fields and round lakes etc. with the dog and it's these routes I'm trying to track and save as we often go out with friends and I can never remember the way we walked if I want to go back and do the same route again. Will this software have all the reserviors etc. marked.
Sorry if these are dumb questions but I've only ever used an in-car Sat Nav before. |

You will need something like Topo GB.
Expensive for what you get!
List a location for your walks and I will send you a screenshot!
Here is Tenby [west wales] and my 'patch' Strumble Head.

Thanks for these. I often walk round the Jumbles, Wayoh and Entwistle Reserviors. There are tracks round each of the reserviors and connecting roads between. |

A location requires a co-ordinate or a Google link.
Remember, I live in Rural Wales |

This is the detail on the PC, I do not load your area onto the unit!!
Remember, the unit stores tracks [unseen] on the SD card for months and years and can be viewed as .gpx files on Mapsource! |

My kind of track taken from the unit from June last year is as shown!
I was caravanning down there but not on that track!
I was travelling on that boat at at 33mph!
What that was in Knots [reef knots] I do not know |

Thank you so much for this. I think I may have to invest in the topo map. It looks like exactly what I need as it has the paths marked but I'm not keen on spending that much unless I really have to.
Sorry to be nuisance but does fugawi also have the paths marked. I'm just wondering whether I'd really need all the detail of the Topo map.
Really I want to be able to go for a walk through the countryside for a couple of hours and have the GPS to track the route and guide me back if I get lost. Then when I get home I want to be able to load it onto my PC and edit the route I took if it's out a bit and save it for use at a later date and when I want to do the same walk again load it onto my GPS.
Any opinions would be great. It seems to be more mind boggling than I thought. |

This is Memory Map on the PC of the same area, far greater detail, as it looks more like a true paper map, but this will not port to your device, you can use it to produce routes and read/ display tracks etc but don't expect to see this sort of detail on the Garmin unit when out walking.
The entire Northern Region 4 map at 50K scale is £50 and covers from Stoke to Carlisle with full coast to coast, only the North Wales bit is missing as its a seperate map - Mike |

As Fugawi comes in DVDs of different areas, I do not have your area/DVD!
However, Fugawi looks very similar to the Memory Map that Mike has shewn.
Fugawi [latest versions] are transferrable to 60CSX.
As my version is old, it only operates on the iQue. |
