Hi,
I am thinking of buying a Toyota RAV4 (new or newish) and have checked lists of makes and models of cars that have athermic windscreens.
I can't find Toyota on the list of manufacturers so I assume not.
Is there anyone here who has a RAV4 who can tell me if they find the TomTom works OK (or not)?
Many Thanks

Hi Dave,
Why not "try before you buy?" - pop into your nice RAV4 dealer and ask for a test drive. Before you set off, plop your 300 onto the windscreen, switch on and see how it goes? Maybe even ask the nice high-powered RAV4 salesman whether it's got an athermic windscreen? (Having said which, my high-powered Renault Kangoo van salesman didn't know it came with a two year unlimited mileage warranty!). _________________ Dennis

Hi Dennis,
I took one for a test drive yesterday and had so many questions to ask, things to try out etc the TomTom completely slipped my mind and I didn't test it.
Just feel a bit foolish asking for another test drive.
I'll ask them tomorrow whether it has an athermic windscreen.
It'll be interesting to see if they know the answer.
Thanks

Ah. Sorry for that Dave - it seemed so obvious I only ever thought that you had not yet had a test drive. Foolish of me not to consider you omitted it. I'm not a great vehicle shopper, only have the Kangoo van new every two years. But I look at the specs all the time and only ever find "Heat reflecting windscreen" - I dunno whether that's athermic? My TT GOs all seem to work through it. I don't see the point in asking my high-powered van salesman! _________________ Dennis

No problem, it was good advice. I just forgot to mention I'd test drove one when I first posted.
I have a Renault Scenic at the moment and definately need the aerial otherwise it's on 1 or 2 bars, quite often no bars without it.
Cheers

No need for another tet drive... Wouldn't just sitting in one on the forecourt tell you enough? |

I do not think they have a athermic windscreen but suggest you do a post on Toyota owners club forum they have a link just for Ravs.
You will probably find the site interesting |

Can't say for certain whether or not a RAV has an athermic windscreen but can say that my TomTom (300) picks up a much stronger signal in my wife's car (which definitely doesn't have an athermic windscreen) than it does in my RAV4 - model previous to current one.
Generally signal is fine and I rarely have problems but urban jungles cause problems sometimes.
If you have a SIRFstarIII receiver you shouldn't have any problems.

Didn't spot you have a 300 like mine - I should learn to read.
You should be fine.

Thanks DeeSee.
I have the aerial, just hoping I don't need to use it in the Rav4. _________________ ___________________________

Interesting.
So have I. I use it only rarely when I feel I may need it. I have stuck some velcro on it and stuck it to the sun roof cover and I keep it and the cable coiled out of site up there, bringing the cable out when I want to use the aerial.
I have my 300 on the screen to my right so the cable pushes into the A pillar trim quite neatly. When I stop and remove my 300 and mount I just coil the cable up and put it back above the sun roof cover.
I hardly ever use my sunroof though - I don't see the point of one on an air conditioned car.
