After reading this review I'm still a bit confused if the TMC problems are purely related to the TomTom devices or the TMC services in the UK.
How do other PND brands perform TMC wise in the UK? |

TMC issues affect ALL PND devices to varying degrees. Garmin have a breakout box which allows an external antenna to be connected which helps a lot in capturing signal but it's a solution that few would wish to use. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Ah yes good point, I confess I forgot about that as I've never used it with any success but It does need covering. I'll add a section today! _________________ Darren Griffin |

TomTom is known for capturing TMC signal very badly, that's why I was wondering if it was fixed or not and one could use it in countries (I'm from Belgium) where the signal should be better

To be fair, yes the antenna is far from the best but it's no worse than any of the bits of string supplied by others such as Navman, Navigon, ViaMichelin etc. _________________ Darren Griffin |

The road is the A30 in Cornwall, and runs from N 50.436554 W 4.762673 to N 50.403668 W 4.906966. The new road is dual carriageway all the way, with only 2 (I think) major junctions along its length, while the old road is single carriageway with multiple minor junctions.

the 520 with latest maps does not have this road. i was down there just before christmas and it played havoc with both the 520 and copilot 7 (Q3 2007 navteq)...

Hi Darren
Thanks for an interesting and well laid out review. I have been toying with the idea of changing from a TT5 navigator to one of the Go series and this model looks as if it would fit the part.
However, I would like to know what you think of the internal speaker. I drive a Transit and a decent speaker volume is important. So how would you describe the speaker? Good, poor etc. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

Simply answered, at it's loudest it is too loud for me, it'd be fine in a van I should imagine. DennisN on these forums is a white van man and has a 720, he may be able to confirm my opinion of it's suitability for use in a van? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi Darren
Thanks for answering my speaker query. Back in the old days one had to ask the Salesman questions before making an expensive purchase and very often the Salesman knew less than the prospective customer.
Yes, the GPS World Forum is of great help to we mere mortals. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

Glad we could help. I accidentally slid the volume slider to full the other day and when the speed camera warning was announced it scared the cr*p out of me! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi Darren
I know that you gave great emphasis on backing up the 920 and quite rightly so too. Now, I don’t want to go off subject but there is one area where PDA users score over ‘Go’ users and that is that PDA users can back up to their device and ‘Go’ users can only back up to a PC.
I’m only mentioning the subject because I’m thing of changing from TT5 to the ‘Go’. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

True but with a PocketPC there were more compelling reasons to have a backup to hand out in the field. In my experience the GO only has issues during firmware updates, installation of other files etc and this is invariably done at home so not such an issue. _________________ Darren Griffin |
