|
|
Here's what I have:
TomTom ONE
App: 7.162
Map: WE 660.1219
I'm going to France, so if necessary, now is the time to take advantage of the updated maps.
So, do I:
Buy the 1700MB WE map (by selecting another TomTom unit)
or
Just buy France
or
Not buy either?
Do you think there'll be a great deal of difference between what I already have and the new WE map and also the France and WE map?
Thanks in advance. |

There has been alot of discussions on this and it has been said that TT maps are discounted just now as end of sales line as they are bringing out a new map in February-March time but some people say to buy now and some say wait for the new one but it is one you will have to decide for yourself. I am also going to France soon and will be using my 710's origional 675 WE map so i am not buying the discounted map but will see how the new one is. _________________ NEW Tomtom GO 500 (hope it is good)

It has been said here (elsewhere) that the v660 map was better than the v675 - paid more attention to detail.
There must surely be some difference between your present map and the latest v710 and at least one difference is the roads are straighter (sorry, the map shows the roads straighter). Some of us think that's a degradation. But there will surely be a newer road on there somewhere.
You won't get terribly lost with WE v660.
If you're wanting to get a new map, I'd say the WE or better still, the Western & Central Europe map (GO700/910) would be more of a bargain than the France only one, not least because you wouldn't have to switch maps to use it, just drive straight off the ferry and it is where you are. Providing you've got enough space for the size of them. _________________ Dennis

Thanks guys.
Will give it some thought.
Would be interesting to know what extras are in the individual maps over the WE versions.
And also what the quality of the maps are.
I've checked the teleatlas online maps and there's roads missing near to me which were build 14 years ago! |

Well today is my last chance to upgrade.
Can anybody confirm that the new 1700MB maps contain less or more data than the old v660 900MB version? (Asked due to conflicting comments on these forums)
Also, Can I asume correctly that the WE maps are exactly the same as the individual country maps put together?
Or do the individual country maps have more detail?
Thanks. |

I think you'll just get all the same conflicting arguments repeated again!
Many differences were due to TomTom's trial of using Navteq mapping in the Europe version of the "ONE NEW (a.k.a 2nd) Edition".

As far as I know they are the same. |

Thanks Andy.
Any idea why the WE & CE map is smaller than WE by itself?
Am currently trawling through the forum trying to find out, but you may know already. |

Offer has now been extended to 5th February
Edit when you click the tomtom site some times it says offer extended to 5th February and sometime it says offer ends 31 st January ????

Yeah. You're right.
The TomTom homepage says 5th Feb, when you click on it, it still says 31st Jan.
Looks like (from what I've read) the larger maps of WE do have more details than the compressed less than 1GB version.
Still odd that with the extra 4 countries included in the WE&CE map, it is 100MB less than the WE map by itself! |

Am currently trawling through the forum trying to find out, but you may know already. | I think you'll find it depends which device you're declaring when you buy.
For example, for GO920, W & CE is listed at 2036, whereas WE is 1785.
Frankly, it's a mystery, known only to TomTom and they come up with different answers depending on who asks. _________________ Dennis

Well, took the plunge and bought the new map.
Can't install it now. TomTom Home says it cannot be installed on the connected device (or something along those lines).
Didn't you used to be able to download the map to your HDD rather than direct to the device? |

I'm afraid this is NEW BEHAVIOUR from Home. Haven't seen a get-round yet. I've got a question open with TT support about it.
I downloaded and installed a W+CE map quite happily using Home a couple of weeks ago, but NOW it is saying it cannot be installed on either the internal memory (OK - I know it is too small) OR the SD card (where it is already installed and working fine!).
Another "improvement" to Home!!

As far as I know, that is still the case (not at a PC with a map downloaded at the moment, but I f***ed up the download of that W+CE map first time by trying to do it on a PC with a small C: drive).
Look in the "downloads section of wherever Home is set to put it's stuff. |

Is it saying there's not enough space? If so, make a full backup using Windows Explorer, then delete the existing map, then install again. In my case, Home said it wouldn't and "you need to create space" and it offered me the chance to delete something, so I did (with backups already). _________________ Dennis

This is a HOT issue on a NA tomtom forum today as users are realizing the full implication of TomTom's 'lockdown' mentality regarding maps.
People who bought SD cards for their units with the eye of buying larger maps for an area are seeing that, even with the additional storage available, the knowledge that the maps would run on their units AND the desire to purchase the maps, they still can't!
Further, some who DID purchase maps still can't dl them now.
This is a problem that isn't going away soon. TomTom management didn't think this through very carefully .... unless they wished to drive prospective purchasers to competitors' devices. |

Initially I didn't have the new card in when I logged in to TTH2.
I backed up my old card, then installed the new card, restored the backup and deleted the old map.
This gave me over 1900MB of space available.
Then.....
......my battery ran out on the TomTom.
Have been charging it during the day so will see what happens when I get home.
Not happy if I can't install it.
Is it to do with TTH2.2?? Would it work if I could find a verison of 2.1? |
