Back on topic, the OGG file download pages here have now been updated with a European text To Speech Voice Alert and an 'Other POIs' Compilation. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yes.
On a ONE make sure you agree "yes" when it asks if this is the sound you want to use (even though you haven't heard it. If you say "no" it crashes the unit. |

|

OK - I admit to being a bit gormless here - but I just cannot get the sound files to work!
I'm using the TomTom Go 300 - and it's using the latest software, and can be maintained using the TomTom Home application. Since the application was upgraded - the voices for the speed cams from here don't work - therefore I've dutifully followed the destructions on this site and forum - but they still don't work!
Idiots guide time:
I've got a nice little folder on my PC that contains 3 files for each alert type - eg.
pocketgps_uk_gatso_20.bmp
pocketgps_uk_gatso_20.ogg
pocketgps_uk_gatso_20.ov2
I should copy these into the TomTom Maps folder (UK and Ireland).
Then I should (on the TomTom) ensure that all of these POIs are enabled, and for each one select to WARN IF 300 yards for example, and select the sound warning - but it appears that the only sounds that I can choose are Bell, Chime etc.
Am I a complete looney?
Answers below please! |

1. You don't need to Enable POIs if using Warn When Near.
2. If, when the OGG File is present, you are asked "Is this the sound you want to select?", tap YES. With the OGG File being present, the unit assumes you want this, unless you choose NO. _________________ Richard

I have just treated myself to a 520 and loaded speed zoned cameras and Crystal text to speech warnings. Both are great but I find Crystal's voice quieter than Simon's computer voice instructions. Can Crystal's voice be made louder? |

Unfortunately, all the voice files have already been made as loud as possible without distorting (they have been compressed and normalised to peak digital level).
They actually match the "normal" TomTom voices quite well. However, TomTom have arranged the "computer" voices to be way too loud compared to everything else, including the sound effects and mp3s.
As an experiment, I recorded the output of the "Simon" voice, adjusted it to peak digital level and put it back in the "sounds" folder as a sound effect. That also played quieter than the same voice doing the navigation instructions.
I've been badgering TomTom to introduce a set of volume sliders so we can make our own adjustments. The more people who complain the better, so if you suggested it too on their feedback form, I'd be grateful.
https://www.tomtom.com/plus/feedback.php (you have to be logged into the TT site to get the form). |

Thanks Andy I have just done that. I can imagine their reaction "we do not support third party add-ons". |

Quite true...
But when you complain about the dreadful quality of their own POIs for the UK, they get all sniffy and say "well you can always use third-party ones if you don't like ours". |

Hi
I have down loaded and installed the Liz speed zoned warning sound ogg files and placed then in the map folder of my TomTom 520 along with the speed zoned cam database, and followed your instructions for setting them up. The problem is that when the ogg file plays a warning they sound horribly distorted.
TomTom instructions sound clear it is just the sound effect ogg files that sound distorted.
As a double check, I have played the ogg files in media paler and they sound fine on the computer.
I have the latest software version instaled on the TomTom
Have you any idea what I am doing wrong |

Hmm... that's a new one on me.
As an experiment can you try MOVING all the .ogg files out of the map folder and put them in the "sounds" folder instead.
If you go through the warn when near setup again you should now get the normal sound effects page to select from, but the Liz oggs will be there too (It will be difficult to choose the correct one due to the file-naming convention but just select any one for now).
Do they sound OK when you preview them there? |

Was the device powered up via the charger lead or running off the battery when you encountered the distortion as low battery capacity can affect audio quality, more so when high level audio is demeanded - Mike |

Thank you I did not think of that. I will do this tonight and try it on the road tomorrow.
Just to make things a little more odd. If I play a demo of a route at a slow enough speed to get warnings the sound is perfect but on the road they are distorted.
Thank you for the help

I must admit I have been using the unit powered by the internal battery while I wait for a dual adapter fort the cigar lighter as at the moment it is used for an other device. I will visit Maplin’s tomorrow and purchase one just to see if low power is the answer. I hope that yours and Andy_p2002 suggestion might fix the problem. I hope so because I never had this problem on my trusty go 300
Many thanks to you both for the help. |
