change the voice that gives you the directions i.e. John Cleese etc ?
Also, I'm off camping in France this year and going to a campsite near DisneyLand, am I right, that if I go to the Garmin POIloader I can add Disneyland as a POI and also the campsite ?
Do I need to know the addresses for these ?
And lastely, I got a 30 day subsciption to the Garmin speed cameras but when this runs out I know I can use the PocketworldGPS one, does it give me the same voice warnings and screen displays ??
Cheers in advance

Yes you can, however you will need to replace the current voice file with it's replacement. Not entirely sure how you do this, (do a search on this site) but from other posts I've read the software available from this site by Ash allows you to create the file if it is not already a complete set (I understand there are over 100 voice instructions in each file). My recommendation, be sure to back up your Garmin BEFORE you start tinkering, you can always revert.

If you download one of the POI file from this site as a .csv file, and then open it, you will see it's structure. You don't need addresses, but you do need the longitude and latitude of the location, plus also a small bitmap so that it shows on screen. As long as you follow this structure, and save the resultant file as a .csv, it should load with POIloader.

Unless i'm mistaken, the 250 does not give 'voice' warnings, just bongs and text at the top of the screen. The PockworldGPS set works on a similar basis, but if you use Ash's Camera manager software, you can configure both what is shown on the map screen (I use speed signs) and also how soon before the camera it sounds.
Hope this helps. |

Cheers Allen,
Who's Ash and do I contact him ?
Just to recap, I need to know the longlitude and latitiude of the campsite to add it to the POI loader ?
I should also point out that I am a complete and utter novice with this things, I don't have much lucks with eletrics and most of what you said went over my head !
What did you say in lay mans terms !!
How do you back it up ? When i connect with the USB I have an option to explore files so is it a case of copy and pasting everything over to a new folder on the C drive of the PC ? |

Cheers for the link MaFt, I think you really need to know what your on about with that link as it talks about VPM files and split it into its component audio samples which is well over my level of competance ??
What does it all means in short 'idiot proof' form !! |

a vpm file is the garmin voice file. it contains a 'table of contents' and about 150 'parts' whih make up all the voice samples.
put simply the unit will ask for certain 'parts'** of the file to play a message eg: 012 + 029 + 0 85 + 103 may make the unit say ' when possible, make a u-turn' rather than having the whole phrase they get broken down so same parts can be reused (eg numbers: one, two three etc and hundred rather than having one, two, three, one-hundred, two-hundred, three-hundred etc.
what the software does is use the table of contents to split the large file into individual samples so you can change any specific 'part' of it then stitch them back together again.
hope that makes a bit more sense?
MaFt
** there are lists in the thread of the actual parts and voices |

I'd be carefull with Ask10's application(s) as it's sending data from your PC over the internet, when you click 'Join'

I wouldn't be too concerned about ASH10's s/w. There are many happy users here. _________________ Phil |

No it isn't. It's checking if there's a newer version available. That is all... |
