Hi,
I got my first ever SatNav unit about a week ago, a GoPal 210 and I'd love to get any info about map update options in particular.
I got this because it was on offer at a really good price - I did a quick web search first, which seemed to conclude that it was a good unit, albeit quite basic. I've had some good and some bad experiences with it in use, and I'm concerned that some of the maps are out of date. There wasn't any info with the unit about updating map info, so I called up the Medion UK helpline. The person I spoke to was quite pleasant, but obviously didn't know the products, she was just a regular telesales, so I'm not sure if what she told me was correct.
She told me that my system is not up to date and that to update would mean ordering a new disk from the Medion website. The cost of this would be £50 - which is what the unit cost me! But then it turned out that the upgrade wasn't actually available for the GoPal 210, and it looks like it might not be. I suspect she was referring to the actual software for the unit, so I asked if I could update the maps without this. Maybe a misunderstanding, but she told me there are no updates - I don't think she made any differentiation between the mapping data and the mapping software - which I assume are separate entities?
So I'd really like to know if this is correct? If so, my GPS unit is going to get more and more out of date as time goes on! I can see that the actual mapping data is from Navtech, so maybe I should be contacting them? I did put it to Medion that when a product is supplied new it should come with the latest software / data or the client should be able to download this, free of charge. As they say it is not available this may be irrelevant, but it does seem very odd!
Anybody with a Medion unit that can make any suggestions, or maybe somebody that knows about the Navtech mapping software?
Worst case I can perhaps take it back to Currys where I bought it and upgrade to a better known make with more support. I didn't pay much for it, but I didn't really feel I could justify spending much because most of the time I drive in areas I know well and don't really have much need for SatNav.

I'm in the same boat as you.
The updated mapping costs about twice as much as the unit. But hey, how much changes anyway ? Bought mine for areas I'm not familiar with & dont much care as long as it gets me where I want to go. Reckon I'll upgrade if the Satnav experience turns out to be more useful tha a good old map. Good Luck
From what Medion UK told me though, it doesn't sound like upgrading the mapping is actually possible. Hard to believe! But they may have meant the software, rather than the mapping data. The person I spoke to wasn't a product specialist by a long stretch.

The UK maps are pretty much up to date....pls consider just how little money is spent on the UK roads these days....!!!!
What more would you want to update???
I presume POIs & Cameras.....
I would reconmend downloading POIWARNER, & subscribing to the camera database on this forum...it is excellent.
What I wouldn't do is frig about putting TOMTOM on the 210..UNLESS you are prepared for loads of heartache!!!
(However, there are plenty of people on this forum who have done this, so feel free to ignore this advice!!)
IMHO the 205/210 nav software is as good as anything else out there...when you consider the low cost of the units.
Hi - thanks for the info. Yes, considering I got the unit for a song, it seems churlish to complain about the out of date mapping!
But although sometimes it has been fine, it also tries to send me down completely non-existent turnoffs or seems to be unaware that I'm on a roundabout! The speed camera database that is on there actually has been 100 per cent accurate so far, which is great - BTW, how much is it to subscribe to the camera database here?
I've also found that the listings for petrol stations is woefully out of date, but to be honest that doesn't much concern me. All I really want is accurate route mapping and the rest - even the speed cam data - is icing on the cake!
I'll have a better idea of how well it performs in another week or two. For the price I won't mind if it occasionally throws a wobbly, but I was really surprised when Medion told me that the data couldn't be updated! If the actual mapping data is courtesy of NavTeq, then maybe there is hope? Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions folks! _________________ http://www.rolent.co.uk
