|
|
Have just bought my first pocket PC with Navman SmartST V2. I must say I am not impressed. Wish now I had gone for the tomtom 3. Is there anywhere I can go to get an update for the maps. The new A130 trunk road from Rayleigh to Chemlsford is not shown, and neither is the new M6 toll. Surely this is not right.
Also I want to download the speed camera site to points of interest. I have been told that the speed camera database is not compatible with Navman.
Is this true? Is there a way around this?
many thanks!! |

'Fraid so. I actually emailed Navman today to ask if there were going to release the latest TeleAtlas maps. I'll let you know if I get an answer.

Which probably uses the same data, so you'd be no better off in the mapping respect.

Yes it is true, and no, there's no way around it at the moment at least. _________________ Tim |

Well the POI databases are not compatible at the moment...
Word from Navman is "We are planning POI integration in the next release, due out in September"
Not sure exactly what is meant by that statement but if it refers to customizable POIs then roll on version 3 |

As far as the maps go, Tom Tom do have the same problem. No M6, etc. I have heard similar murmourings that Navman will be including POI integration in their V3 software. Fingers crossed |

I use the navman with a XDA II, cracking piece of kit, I'm not sure why your complaining, whoever complies the map data must have a cut off point in time, the new M6 and the A130 haven't been open that long. |

M6 Toll made it into TeleAtlas data (used by both TomTom Navigator 3 and Navman SmartST Pro 2) some time around January 2004 according to threads elsewhere in the forums. That made it too late for the cut-off for both of those products.
Some pressure is being put on TomTom to re-release the UK maps for Navigator 3 (which didn't actually come to market until after this date) - though I think that will wash rather less with Navman, as it's been out rather longer than TomTom Navigator 3.
The industry standard at the moment is that new maps are only made available with software upgrades unless severe defects are found necessitating a re-issue (as happened with one of the Navigator 2 Scandinavia maps, which was set up to drive on the wrong side of the road, or with Navigator 2 USA where there were quite serious navigation problems that could only be cured by a map re-issue). I'm not aware of any product that's been reissued just to cover the opening of a major road, however major that road is.
There is always a lag between new roads being opened and them making their way into satellite navigation systems. The only scenario where it's a pain not having M6 Toll on the map is if you want to join or leave it part way along its length - if you want to go its entire length, just turn off your system for the duration of that journey.
In Navigator 3, you could get round this in part by using POIs where the M6 Toll junctions are - which would allow you to navigate to M6 Toll. I'm not aware of anyone producing such a POI file, though!

Version 3 out in September, with updated maps and customisable POI's? No doubt there will be a cost for this upgrade in which case Navman will have released two chargable upgrades in a nine month period. Seems a bit steep to me. Time will tell....... |

Actually it would only be seven months. Version 2 was released at the beginning of February!
I am only assuming it to be version 3 as it was referred to as 'next release'.
Unless the 'upgrade' for current users of version 2 is competitive, then Navman may find a lot of customers will be frustrated in much the same way as was seen at the release of version 2.
By September I can justify switching to another product if pricing is not competitive.
We will have to wait and see! |
