Actually TalkTalk (Carphone Warehouse) owns AOL UK. AOL and TT are still separate but TT now uses the AOL infrastructure for it's email. Like how Sky uses Google Mail for it's email. |
Yep...that's as I understand it.
They supply a Dell Inspiron 1520 (Vista Basic, DVD Writer, Media card slot etc) in return for a 24 months contract.
The laptop is a nice piece of kit & knocks 7 colours of 'good for the roses' out of my Latitude D630.
Was supposed to be a cheap Xmas prezzie for one of the kids...until the Mrs nabbed it for herself. |

This article might also be of interest - here
Quote: | Action should be taken over consumers' concerns about broadband connection speeds, a watchdog has said.
The Ofcom Consumer Panel said speeds advertised as "up to" a certain level end up being much slower in reality. |

I've been told that, for my postcode, 4.4Mb/s is the best I can expect from broadband down a phone line, but my Virgin cable broadband is usually 18-19Mb/s and has peaked at 19.5Mb/s - so I'm happy _________________ Andy

Will run this on my home system over the hols - but not expecting great things. Max speed we get in our area is 512kbps down and 128kbps up. We are nearly 3 miles "as BT wire the phones" from a very small village exchange and broadband was installed after a lot of pressure from local villagers. I'm not holding my breath for any upgrade to speed yet! But to be fair to my supplier (PLUSNet) when doing downloads it does max-out the link, regularly getting 57.6 KBps according to the stats. _________________ Phil |

More or less as I expected. Upload speed better than advertised.
I love living in the country - but poor networking is what happens here! _________________ Phil |

Pretty impressive, although download speed isn't always showing as being so high.
File download speeds are also pretty good, at up to 1.3MB/s
I've also noticed on the speedtest.net results page that the distance to the server is usually showing as ~50 miles, but the distance to the same server has been ~150 miles on a number of occasions:

i get about 500kb/sec downloads on 4mb connection with virgin. 1.3mb/s seems a bit slow... more like 10mb?!

That's where the confusion comes in - MB vs Mb
Bit vs byte and all that
This is 1.3 megaBYTE per second, not megaBIT
1 byte = 8 bits
1.3 x 8 = 10.4
Hence, 1.3MB/s = 10.4 megabits per second
So you're quite right - 10.4mb/s is exactly what I'm getting for downloads _________________ Andy

The highest download speed I've had, which was in the middle of the night when most people are tucked up in bed, was 2.2MB/s (17.6mb/s) - but there obviously wasn't much going on at that time and I was able to obtain the bandwidth and normally the download speed tops out at about 1.2-1.3MB/s.
Even with a 300MB file, you blink and it's downloaded (well, almost - 2-3minutes max for the download) _________________ Andy
