Question?
At circuit board level what are the differences between c510,530 and 550
I'm guessing not many, and functionality maybe switched off rather than actual components missing on the board |

Same firmware.
However, there's some physical differences at least in the shell - as an example, the C510 doesn't have the jack plug or mic on the unit that the C550 will have.
My understanding is that there is a difference in them physically - ie additional hardware / sockets / chips that are used on the higher end models - but I haven't seen pictures of them exploded ;-) / taken apart that has physically proven it to my eyes.
I suppose it's possible that the hardware is virtually identical (with some wiring differences for the external inputs / outputs), and some model identity that the software / firmware uses to decide on options.
Personally, though, I suspect the higher end have additional hardware / circuitry (ie bluetooth, and mp3 decoding and the like) that say the C510 simply doesn't have.
And yes, I realise in saying all of that, that the C510 can be modded to do TTS. |

I've heard you can do this, but doesn't it mean 'downgrading' one or more elements of the firmware?
If so might be a mixed blessing |

I think the only difference between the C510 and C530 is the amount of memory. The Bluetooth chipset appears to be missing from the C510 ... at least, I can't spot anything that fits the bill - and I can see quite a few empty spaces on the board. (I assume the C530 is identical in that respect)
Some of the functionality is just turned on and off by firmware - though I don't know what it uses to make its decisions. Text-To-Speech works well on the C510, so long as you don't go beyond V5.4 firmware (and I see no compelling reason to do so!).
PS - Australian C510's do TTS out of the box! |
