Very funny. Not.
I did not receive an email invitation from TomTom, and may i suggest that someone who did and still has a copy, also make a complaint to ASA. It will serve to add weight to the complaint. This can be done online here:
http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/how_to_complain/complaints_form/
The ASA can, and will take action, if they are of the opinion that TomTom are acting illegally. It may not get us a true 50% discount, but should stop them making false claims in future.
Reply from ASA -
" Thank you for submitting your complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority. We have passed your complaint to our Complaints team.
A Complaints Executive will assess your complaint and will reply in full as soon as possible. " |

Ok Andy thanks for the advice - I’ll be constructive. If the ASA do support this claim for false advertising then what is likely to happen is that TomTom will pull the offer and the prices will revert to the full price. In a climate of rising prices it is refreshing to see a large company like TomTom offering a good deal and if I wanted to buy a new map I would be very pleased to be able to buy the GB & RI for £29.95 rather than £41.95.
If I go to the ‘Buy Map’ page on the site it is quite clear how much the map will be so there is no confusion at the point of purchase. It’s not like driving 50 miles to a shop and find the advertised price is not what you have to pay is it? There may be many guys waiting until after the expense of Xmas to see if they’ve got enough money to afford a new map – only to find the offer has been dropped because of all this whinging.
Go on –tell me it’s all about the principle. |

Come on Snudge
TomTom are not offering this deal out of the kindness of their hearts - its pure marketing and there will always be another offer. But perhaps next time they will treat their customers with the respect that the law requires.
All they needed to do was change the advertising to say "up to 50%" and perhaps even apologise for the misleading statement. Thats all.
But instead they treat us as idiots with patronising e-mail replies to our complaints which then contain even more misleading information (average 50% off !)
And that really annoys me!!!!

As TT have not seen fit to reply yet to my last email to them I too have lodged a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority.
Snudge, It'll be ok will it when the next time you go to Sainsbury's and a "buy one get one free" offer turns out at the till to be "buy one get one half price"? _________________ Bazzza

Whilst your at it with ASA, please mention to them that TT have a habit of ripping you off on the exchange rates too. In the respect that they dont apply them!
I made a recent purchase from TT advertised on the website as 39.95 euro's only to find a charge on the visa at £39.95 when it should have been about £25.00.
Has anyone else had this with TT? or is it just me?
I did challenge the Visa company only to be told the transaction was processed in UK pounds not euro's! _________________ TVR

You're lucky. They haven't answered me for two days. Perhaps they are hoping I will just go away. _________________ Bazzza

you wont get far with UK Trading Standards, as TomTom are based in the Netherlands, so you will need to contact the equivilant shown below, maybe they can help, had the same problem with TomTom December last year, they seem to get away with it all the time, maybe if they get enough complaints then they will get into trouble for a change...
*Traders Details:
TomTom Sales BV Rembrandtplein 35 1017 CT Amsterdam The Netherlands
Tel: +31 (0)20 850 0800 Customer Support Phone (from UK) 08451610009
*send your complaints to:

IMO: Save yourself some money and Buy a £2.99 map from your local garage to use with your SatNav, you will possibly find it is more acurate than the alledged New Maps that you pay for your SatNav - its not an ideal solutution, but TomToms customer service appears to be second to everyone (Still!) |

I've just got off the phone with TomTom UK about this matter, and they said that not all the maps are at 50% discount, but some are. _________________ Plank.
