|
|
Purchased a GO520 around mid sept i think. Have always deliberately refused the prompt to upgrade home from the bundled 1.6 to the 2.xxx series due to people's comments about all the bugs etc at the time. The general feel then, was that you were better off sticking with 1.6!
Now of course i am aware that there have been at least a couple or so updates of Home 2 since etc ....so am basically putting forward the question to experienced users "Is it now generally recomended for a 1.6 user to upgrade to the latest Home version?" For example, am I correct in understanding that certain features are only available if you have 2.1xx and above. Furthermore I would like to do the long overdue app update from the bundled 7.00 to the latest (what ever it be). Would people recommend I attempt this, seperately, after I have installed the latest version of Home?
Reading on this forum all the problems people have regarding various upgrades of firmware, apps, maps wiped devices, refunds, brick wall customer support. Crikey for a beginner like myself for a consumer device it just goes beyond understanding (yes I have a win exp back up!) _________________ TT GO 520

Hi,
I upgraded to TTH2 a few weeks ago and have no problems with it at all. To be fair, I never had any issues with the earlier version either. The earlier version ran on my PC using XP Home and the latest version is running on the Vista Home Premium platform. As ever you should back everything up using Windows rather than TTH before you upgrade to the new version at least then you can always drop back if you have to.
So far as recommending is concerned, you have to remember that people will always tend report problems so you don't get hear from the 'silent' majority which then gives the impression that it's all doom & gloom. I haven't had problems and there will be a majority who don't have problems with it either. The same thing applys to upgrading the application version - I've had no problems with the upgrade nor have I had any problems upgrading my map (twice).
The only recommendation I can make is go for it but take a full backup FIRST via Windows.

When I installed Home v2.0 there was an option to keep your version of Home 1.5/1.6 if I wished, so I don't think you have a problem.
Having said that, I don't think DennisN ever saw that option, so maybe it vanished if you went straight from v1.x to v2.1 whereas I went from v1.6 to v2.0 and then to v2.1 from there. My v1.6 is still there and works fine, although if I use it for Mapshare it complains that I've already used a newer version and it would be safer to continue with that one.
I preferred the interface of v1, but have got used to the way v2 works now. TT have said you MUST have v2.1 to do certain things (like download the latest maps) and at least you know that if things aren't working how you expect for anything else, then it can't be blamed on you using an out of date version. |

The option of keeping Home 1,6 on the PC when installing the newer version was only available while the Home 2,0 Beta was on release IIRC - Mike |

That makes sense...
V1 is a pain now anyway. If I ever fire it up, it still insists on downloading yet another version of v2 into the temp directory and then asking me if I want to install it before I can do anything else. |

TomTom support told me today I could not download the new version maps with Home2 and Vista, that the new version of Home does not work properly with Vista.
So, I set up an old XP machine, download the old version of Home, and for the last 5 hours it's been downloading the new US map -- right now it seems stuck on 'Changing content', what a mess. _________________ Doug Weller

TTH is the program TT have designed specifically for their devices. An important (vital?) part of the program is the backup facility. You seem to be saying on the one hand that TT software is fine - and on the other that you don't trust it to do one of its' most important functions (if not the most important) i.e. the backup ! Not being able to trust the software to do backups is definitely a problem in my opinion ! _________________ TED

YES I did indeed see and tick the option to keep my previous version. NO, the ***** thing didn't keep it - it left me two apparent versions in Start, Programs, but clicking either of them only gave me v2. It's a good job that TT Home is so popular it's used by at least 2.5 million users! _________________ Dennis

I had exactly the same experience. Apparently two versions, but clicking on either launched v2.
But I have had no problems using the latest version of Home. _________________ Anita

Got a solution, Dennis....
Put in Anita as a TomTom buddy, travel to where she's located and when she's not looking, just switch units with hers
Didn't say it was a GOOD solution, just a solution |

OK Dennis. I'll stop posting until I have a problem, preferably one that you don't have, just to make you feel better! _________________ Anita

I do wonder if sometimes it seems as if I'm gloating over winning such a terrific prize in the competition, and I really don't mean to. But banter can be misconstrued, and I know there are some who feel it doesn't belong here at all.

I'm still feeling my way with the 720, but I've received so much help from these forums with both of my devices that it's nice to sometimes be able to offer help.

I'd be interested to know how you managed that, although I've got used to Home 2 now, so wouldn't try it. _________________ Anita
