I am watching quite a number of threads and for days I will get e-mails saying that there has been a reply and then NOTHING. When I realise that your service has stopped e-mailing me I usually go around all the threads, I can remember, and Stop watching and then Start watching again.
This I did quite recently and Lo everything, bar one, has stopped again.
How do I fix this? |

are you sure the emails are not being blocked by any anti-spam software?
personally i prefer to use the 'View posts since last visit' link then scroll through looking for interesting threads or ones I know I have contributed to

Very strange!
As soon as I submitted the query, within two minutes, I received updates on various threads.

No, I use MailWasher, so I see all the mail directly on the ISP servers. |

One thought. Remember that if you do not react to an email notification, you will not get another - you MUST visit the topic (presumably via the link in the email) in order to preserve your "watch this topic". I never have any trouble with this. _________________ Dennis

I wish I could give you an answer but as it appears to work for most of us it is reasonable to assume the cause does not lie with us? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Could it be that my name is too long/e-mail address too long as it has happened again. No e-mails but loads of replies in threads that I am supposed to be watching.

The fact that you use the word 'MOST' implies that I am not the only user with this problem and like most organisations, which are always perfect, it is always the user that is at fault and not some quirk in the procedure.
If it works once it should always work so why has mine stopped?
For your information my normal PC is and has been out of action since Friday so any peculiarities you might have blamed on that will not wash and I am currently accessing my e-mails directly from the ISP. |

Hmmm. I think Darren is using the word MOST rather than be overpresumptuous by using the words "All the rest" - he can't say nobody else has the problem in case somebody does, but isn't telling us.
I myself cannot recall anybody else having this problem except when they subsequently realise they have inadvertently failed to visit the topic every time an e-mail arrives. I sometimes end up with more than one e-mail notification for a topic and I always make sure I visit it each time. Maybe overkill, but at least I never fail to get emails.
And I think rather than blaming the user, he is offering the opinion that the site is not at fault. Pedantic? Maybe, but I don't see the words "your fault" in his reply. You indicate that from time to time you access emails from other than your normal PC - might this have some effect? I don't know, just wondering - I can access my email from elsewhere, but I never dare answer it from there, because I'm too ignorant to know what I'm doing. I just feel that if I open emails from another PC, they may not get to my normal PC. Now tell me I don't know what I'm talking about - only DON'T, because I already know that! _________________ Dennis

As Dennis has said, I used the phrase 'Most' as I cannot possibly know that nobody else has had the issue. All I can say with certainty is that I have never heard of such an issue before.
I used to work in IT and am well aware of the tendency to pas the buck but we are not like that here. If there is an issue we would prefer to resolve it but in your case I don't think it lies with us and have no useful suggestions as to why it is happening.
Perhaps you could tell us more about your email set-up, firewall, e-mail client, ISP etc? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Darren
You replied on Tuesday Nov 6th - I have not received an e-mail telling me that.
Darren & Dennis
The point I was attempting to make was that although my problem is in the minority I would like to get it fixed, Which is why I asked if either my username or e-mail address was too long, as I also worked in IT and have known of instances where the programmer assumed that addresses were only 15 chars and other assumptions. Also as a programmer I remember a hardware person swearing black and blue that his kit couldn't be at fault until he watched it fall over!
So basically I was trying to get someone to investigate why I am not being sent the e-mails when new replies are added to a thread that I am subcribing to. |

If that were the case then your issue would not be intermittent?

And the answer is that I have no idea! Your email address and or user-name are no longer than others who have no issues. Do you have another email address you could use to test that is with a different provider?
It would also be useful to know your OS, email client and what AV and Spam Filtering you might employ? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Got one this time!
I did explain that I have just used two different computers and that I see my email directly on the ISP server (NTL now VirginMedia) before I download it.
However my main PC is running Dual OS, using Vista Ultimate & XP Pro SP2. The other is running Me.
There is only Spam filtering on the main PC which is MailWasher Pro 6.0
We could change to another ISP but only if you are reasonably sure. |

It would be useful to use an alternate email address such as Hotmail or Gmail to test. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Got that one as well! Seems a shame to change it WHEN IT'S WORKING.
